Paul Merson is sad about Liverpool's atrocious season - and says it will get even worse at Stoke.Back to story
It's sad to see what's happened to LFC. Rafa just seems to be losing his grip more and more each week. There are endemic problems at the club and, as you say Merse, LFC are frankly poor all over the park. There is so much to sort out up there and the longer this goes on, the problem just gets bigger and bigger. Rafa has survived purely on past glories but that is history now and it seems obvious to me that he has run out of ideas. LFC need positive, quality management, some new energy and new direction - it's a tired circus there at the moment and their fans deserve better.

"Nigel Howard (Liverpool fan) says... To be brutally honest I do not see LFC winning anything this season" To be brutally honest? Are you for real? You arent left in any competitions except that daft Uefa cup. What do you mean you do not see LFC winning anything? THEY CANT WIN ANYTHING THEYRE NOT LEFT IN ANY COMPETITIONS. WAFC did away with Hull city (a premier league side liverpool not bottom of the championship) Now a nice trip to Forest Green or Notts county should see us into the next round.

I have been a season ticket holder for 23 years now and I must say this is by far the worst team I have seen put out by lfc. We need to get rid now of the stubborn fool as 42k people can see that the likes of lucas (runs round in own world giving away free kicks and is two slow to catch cold) Dirk Kuyt so slow my nan could beat him in a race and could nt pass water nevermind the ball, Babel (be lucky if takes the ball with him most of the time defenders dont need to tackle him cos he does that to himself the list just goes on and on poor poor jokes of footballers whats going on with the scouting if this is the best we can come up with (need I mention voronin and deggan) how these became professional is beyond me. He may have struck gold with ft masch pepe but just look at his record comical. I am so sick of going to watch this dross week in week out and long to be entertained once more but this guy wont do it 2 holding midfielders and one upfront at home????? whats that all about. I could go on forever but just long for the day when he has gone and hope its not too late and we see the likes of stevie ft pepe go before him

i hate to say this but rafa has simply got to go!! he's taken s as far as he can which was 2 nd place last season. I do feel for him and his family becuase you can see they have passion and love for the club. But its like the zonal marking,... when you concede goals and goals and goals because of it then maybe its time for a change of defence? but rafa doesn;'t see this and thinks it'll take time. Liverpool dont have time.. we NEED a trophy. Torres may eventually get fed up and go,, liverpool fans go mad because i said this!! im a die hard lfc fan and would hate him to go!! but be realistic,,, would you want to stay at a club whats not winning anything and pulling you back from being successfull? something needs to be sorted out.. mourinho would be welcomed and praised and so would hiddink!! get any of these two and we'r up and running!! GUARANTEED

This is as I would have said it myselves. Benitez must go when we can afford it. Even a Reading side leading played with two strikers. Benitez sticks with one even when going towards a loss! We are at the moment the most dull team in the premiership and it hurts to say! Wingers... drop them. Find another formation, they do not function! That also goes for players like Lucas and Kuyt among others.

I've been saying for months that Rafa should go, but because some plank has given him a 5yr renewal on his contract we probably can't afford to pay him off until we sell players in the summer. The trouble is that by the summer it will be Torres and Gerrard that will want to be sold. So move him aside (frankly snow clearing and pie-selling are more akin to his abilities) and give Jamie Carragher team control until the end of the season. I know the players would give 100% for Jamie ! We couldn't get any worse, and Jamie would show up what a crap job Rafa is doing....then we could make a permanent appointment in the summer. Martin O'Neill would be my choice !

Benitez is always playing Lucas Leiva! Is he having a laugh! The bottom line in cofidence is very low and their are no leaders on the pitch. At yhis precise moment I see Liverpool finishing in the bottom half of the table, unless a complete turnaround of fortune happens.

rafa has to go..had to many chances.. made 100 signings 10 where good..americans also have to go before they destroy liverpool fc, shankly will be turning in his grave...put king kenny in charge till the summer then go for mourinho...

I just don't get this, it's virtually the same team as last year that nearly won the league, only thing is missing is Alonso and that can't be compared to what we lost in Ronaldo but yet we're still up there, even though we're playing rubbish and with so many injuries, liverpool hardly had any!! Simple. No gerrard no torres and they look a mid table team.. To me, then something has to give, always does, so bye bye Rafa your time is up FACT!

What's wrong with you people? Can you not see what Rafa has done for Liverpool over the past 5 years? Yes, so he is having a bad season - all managers do - but has he made Gerrard play badly this season? Has he made Carra slower than last season? The owners have given him an average of 12.7 million each season to spend - don't always believe figures that some of the media throw out - I mean, even Stoke, Sunderland etc are outspending Liverpool! What other manager would want to work under the conditions that Rafa is working under? None..get a grip you idiots!
Posted 12:57 15th January 2010
"Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and Xabi Alonso would all get into that team today." Alonso, yes he's definitely a big loss - but wanted to leave for many reasons. Crouch would get a lot of games at the moment, especially with Torres injured - but he also wanted to leave and his contract was running down. And Rafa's biggest problem with Robbie Keane was signing him, not selling - he can't get in the Spurs team either now.

100% spot on merse, liverpool lack any cutting edge without torres gerrard and benayoun on the field, and that's where liverpool are going wrong. None of the players have any enthusiasm anymore and it's just going to get worse for us unless benitez can ship out all of the players that wouldn't even get into a championship side such as kuyt,n'gog,el zhar, riera ect ect. then he needs to bring in a top class stirker to partner torres, but the problem with rafa is that even if we did have another top class striker he wouldn't be played up alongside torres he would be shifted out to the right or left because rafa is so stubborn to not differ from his 4-2-3-1 formation, which is just 4 defenders 5 midfielders and 1 attacker at the end of the day, and it's just not what liverpool fans deserve.

Paul, you spot on lad.... the odds baffled me as well. Yesterday, betfair had liverpool at 1.95 and Stoke at 4.9.... to put it bluntly, its a joke. But, am I bothered ;-) I think what people have to realise is, yeah Liverpool were a big big club... not anymore..... just like leeds were a big big club, norwich were a big club, sheff wednesday had their days. Liverpool's time is up, City now fill that final big 4 spot. No way they can get rid of Rafa, you're right Paul. 200 mill in debt already and with all those years left on his contract at 5 mill a year... na won't happen.

I wud normally be the first to slate liverpool but its gone beyond a joke now! the fall doesnt just stop with rafa though as the players have to take responsibility aswel and take a long hard look at themselves. Also like man u the yanks at the top of the club r bleeding them dry and rafa this season has to deliver with the team he started with, and cant make any key transfers that wud turn their fortune around. I can see already that man u r going the same way and will probably be worse off in a couple of seasons, due to the fact that even with the success we hav had recently we are still losing massive amounts of money due to this enourmous yank debt. i know loads of man u fans that will obviously be gloating with the failure of liverpool this season but beware as i think this is going to be much worse for manchester united.

I definetely agree, the Brittania Stadium is a tough place to go even when your on form, let alone when your in a right old slump like Liverpool currently are!! I also predict a Home win, however I can also see in the corner of my mind a sneaky draw!! But id doesnt look good for Liverpool!! Maxi is a good signing hwever!

I could not agree more with Paul. My beloved club Liverpool are a mess. I have said since we just about won the FA cup that this stubborn man is not good enough to manage our team. Liverpool fans are loyal to the blood. That is what the problem is. We cant defend, cant score from set pieces, cant play football like it should be played. We have turned into a long ball team when we have no height or muscle in the squad. In my opinion we only have around 5 players who are any good. I think that Steven Gerrard is fed up and it would not suprise me if he left the end of the season. We rely too much on Torres who in my opinion should be sold. I know this sounds nonsense but the lad cant play 5 games in a row and we rely on him too much. Dont forget this is Liverpool football club. All we can talk about is the past because the future does not look bright under the current regime. If Rafa paid attention to detail like we hear he does then he would change his methods. The man is too stubborn to change and unfortunately he never will because he is Rafael Benitez. "In Spain we did this, we did that". Your not in Spain Rafa your in England. I think its too late for you to adapt. You dug your own grave mate and you have had enough time to get results. FACT - You are not good enough to manage Liverpool FC, like the past few managers. Its not all Rafas fault. It stems from the top. We are run like a bad casino. A bunch of yes men who talk the talk but dont get results. Theres one thing i would love. And that is for Rafa to turn it around and make the likes of me eat my own words. But 5 seasons of the man and i can tell you this will not happen. Its very painful being a Liverpool fan this moment in time. There is no team that fear playing Liverpool at this moment in time and that is so wrong. Please prove me wrong Rafa.

i dont care how much it costs rafa has to go steven g and fernando t are goin to waste away if they stay and play with players like what theyv got. i feel sorry for them. if you really want to do whats write for the club you wouldnt put those players in team kuyt on the right kuyt on the right he dosent scare one left back in the prem. lennon does shawn right does, valencia does, milner does walcott does. ask any left back in the prem. attaking football and attractive football we have none. you could find a better right midfielder in your local park easily and english

I couldnt believe the liverpool vs reading match, everytime they got into readings half, they took it to the edge of the box, and made a 'hopeful' pass into the middle of 4 to 6 reading player, with 1 or 2 liverpool players there. They miss gerrard so much because time after time they lose the ball without getting a shot away. Agger was the only player who looked like scoring to me, becasue he was the only one who took shots! If they want to score they need to start to hit some powerful shots on the edge of the box.

To be brutally honest I do not see LFC winning anything this season, I don't know if thats the owners, managers, players, or a combination of all 3, but i must say I have never seen a side performing so well at the end of last season play with so little passion and heart, and that is not the Liverpool way our squad is rapidly becomeing the joke of the premiership and I for one feel something drastic has to be done. Rafa seems to have 1 way to play the team and that clearly isn't working and the players seem disillusioned and frankly clueless either Rafa has to change his system or go if we can afford to sack him and we need to get rid of the American leeches at the same time and bring in owners who want to make Liverpool shine again.
Posted 12:06 15th January 2010
As a Liverpool fan it pains me to say it but i agree with Merse on this one. Stoke at home are difficult at the best of times but if we don't get a result there, we have Spurs at home next, and they're great on the counter with players like Keane & Crouch having something to prove as well. If the only reason Rafa is still in a job is because we can't afford to get rid of him it's diabolical. For those reds who still say 'in Rafa we trust', you go ahead and trust, i've always backed him up but this season has got worse and worse the longer it's gone on. Rafa's built that squad and spent millions, and if we're still reliant on Gerrard and Torres it's because his signings aren't up to scratch. The only positive to come out of this week is signing Rodriguez, but even then we'll probably see him at left back or something stupid.
