Paul Merson gives his verdict on the deals and rumours on yet another busy transfer deadline day.Back to story
Dean Jones (Everton fan) says...
I have spoken to many friends today in work and on facebook and we are all in agreement that this VDV deal is not kosher. Missing deadlines, only learning 2 hours before the deadline and having Real Madrid & Harry Redknapp involved all sounds like underhand negotiations have taken place. And before those cry it''s sour grapes, take a look at the history of who is involved - Real Madrid who have a history of dodgy dealings along with Harry Redknapp''s cv for dealings especially at Pompey. BENT, BENT, BENT I TELLS YA!

I think wenger is silly for not signing another keeper almunia is not the worst keeper we could have but when we are so called title contenders and we have a keeper that is only ok and we need world class a almunia againt liverpool first game of the season should of saves the n''gog goal it was a good strike but he should''nt get beat at his near post like that because i dont think a keeper like shay given would of let that past n that difference between a ok keeper and a world class keeper will cost us the tittle in the big games when we easily get rolled over by man u and chelsea and proberly even spurs now as i think they are a stronger squad and have better players.

I agree with you mark fayers charlton cole is useless we should have just excepted the first offer 7 million. how can you call a striker a top class player who only scores 9 goals a season.we offered 8 million for mark wilson another portsmouth lad if we had sold cole and added to the 8 milion we could have got huntalar for 10.5 and got a good loanee striker.I love westham but i got a big feeling with all these smaller clubs getting decent players were in for the drop big time.

Harry Redknapp and The FA ought to be ashamed of themselves. If they think that everyone is going to just let this Van Der Vaart deal to go by without anybody questioning the validitiy and methods to how it came about then they are very wrong indeed. How is a player 18 million one day then 8 million on another day at 4pm on what happens to be transfer deadline day and only a select few are told by Real Madrid? The methods to how this deal came about has to be made public especially when Harry Redknapp is involved.

Tut, tut, old Harry Redknapp is up to his old Del Trotter routine. How The FA have allowed this Rafael Van Der Vaart deal to go through is anyone''s guess, it''s as bent as a boomerang and let''s hope it comes back to hit them and show them all up for being the dodgiest of the dodgy that govern and are in this great sport. I hope FIFA and Platini get involved :)

Would you Arsenal fans listen to yourselves! Sack Wenger because he won''t bring a keeper in? Wenger has spent all these years building a legacy at Arsenal which will never be matched in the clubs history, or future. You have one, if not the most talented teams in the Premier League. Chamakh, Squillaci and Koscielny are quality signings and Wenger will bring the very best out of them. I am not an Arsenal supporter, but I would happily pay to see them play. The most exciting team by far in the league, and I bet that you all didn''t think that they would do so well last season? I think you should all be sacked as Arsenal fans just for coming up with such garbage. Wenger sacked? Do me a favour....

think its funny how jealous all liverpool fans seem to be about VDV going to spurs. i mean, you were giving spurs fans loads when joe cole picked liverpool instead of spurs (money money money) now VDV has come to spurs and in my opinion hes better than cole. HAHA!! and people sayin he''s no good? he would never have got a transfer to real madrid unless he was class would he? maybe we wont finish above arsenal just yet, but we''re gettin closer, think the minute fabregas says adios amigos we''ll start finishing above the gooners. Gyan will be a great signing for brucey, hes so exciting to watch. cant wait for this season to warm up. spurs 4th again la la la

I can´t believe what I read sometimes from Arsenal fans, without Wenger this club would fall apart and I could see us being in a worse position similar to Liverpool´s without him. I don´t think you all realise how lucky we are to support such a team. I would also rather have seen a new keeper, but only one that would be a drastic improvement on Almunia, people forget that two seasons ago he was the most improved in the premiership and made few errors. Last season he was poor, but already in the two away games he has played in he played very well, anyone who is willing to smash their head against a post for my team gets my vote of confidence. I think you all saying, "time for Wenger´s head" are deluded. Imagine being a team who has been fighting at the top for as long as we have, Champions League every year and the best football in the country.

good signing in van der vaart ,he''ll improve the team and help us move foward but what we really needed was a central defender as cover for king and dawson

Harry Redknapp up to his old tricks again, "we are not looking to sign anyone up to the close of the window"..... suddenly Van Der Vaart is signed but not without the typical wheeling and dealing that Arthur Daily would have been proud of. Harry, dont be telling us that a price tag of 18million was dropped to 8 million as the window was closing. Why was there a problem with the paperwork Harry...? Why was it not a simple transaction like any other transfer...? Why does this smell of your old Portsmouth days....? You are the ultimate "Wheeler and Dealer"

"Danny Bland (Manchester City fan) said...it remains to be seen whether Gyan can justify his price and whether he can replace Kenwyne and get the partnership built like Jones and Bent" I think you''ll find that Jones and Bent never really had a great partnership.Jones got 9 goals and 2 assists last season. I''ve no doubt Gyan will be a better player for us. Once again we''ve done Stoke out of millions of pounds. You''d think Pullis would have realised he shouldn''t be using us as a feeder club. Never mind. I hate the Potters anyway. I have a feeling we''ll be saying good riddance to them at the end of this season if their form doesn''t drastically improve. Hell, even Wigan and Blackpool have points on the board!

It''s no great surprise that arsenal have not signed anyone of true class. Ok we have signed some good players but our squad is in fact weaker than last season. The problem at arsenal is there is a big split in fans backing wenger and fans that are fed up with him. I believe we still need a top class keeper and holding midfielder to have a great chance of winning something. But there is little point moaning as wenger will never change his way of thinking.

Responding to the comment made by Steve Wright (Chelsea fan). Hleb hardley played at Barcelona which is why his left in search of regular first team action. And as for kick and run football dont think so mate maybe in the past under Mr Potatoe head steve bruce but not now. Were starting to play some nice football as we showed last season. Your rant is pointless, Borin''ell.

Here we are once again Arsene wenger still not spending the money for a decent keeper which everyone knows we desparately need. We still dont seem to have a strong spine to the team, and i think we are still two or three players short in key areas, but the biggest joke has got to be the goalkeeping scenario , why is it wenger seems to have an aversion in signing british players. If the money is not there then he should come out and say so as we the supporters are being short changed very rapidly.

To all LFC fans out there giving out about lack of signings etc,,dont you realise what is going on in our club. There is no money available to sign anyone never mind a top striker.Doesnt this explain why roy tried to exchange Lucas and Babel for Cole.? Stop all your moaning and get BEHIND AND SUPPORT your club and manager.Slating roy at every available chance is doing no good for anyone apart from all them Rafa lovers out there. He is gone to desroy another club now so lets support our manager and players in eveything they attempt this season..YNWA..

This VDV deal should not be allowed to go ahead. Spurs knew the deadline and did not get the various paperwork sorted so no matter how much they tried to get it sorted in time the paperwork was not finalised in time. The FA changed the deadline details this year to accomodate any unforseen hitches like was the case in the last January transfer window with the weather. If the FA let this transfer through then I hope every other club complains because it is not fair and in the best interests of the rules that they made themselves. What I also find that leaves a sour taste of this VDV deal is that on the Monday (the day before transfer deadline day) Bayern Munich were going to pay 18 million for him, a figure a lot of teams would have been put off by, then at 4pm Harry Redknapp gets informed that Spurs can bid 8 million for him by Real Madrid. I''m pretty certain this was not common knowledge to the rest of the world that VDV was available for such a sum and that Real Madrid did not go to Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City,Liverpool, Barcelona, Inter Milan etc... and tell them he was available at this price because they are all potential rivals to current and future Champions League and domestic success. Come on FA stand by your rules.

Im very disappointed in Wenger again. We are despeate for a keeper weho can dominate and control his penalty area with confidence. Its even obvious on the telly that our back four are nervous when Almunia is put to the test! As for Fabianski, well he is nowhere near Premiership class. The best keeper that we have on hand right now is Mannone who at least has some presence with his imposing size and he did well when called upon last season.Wenger insists on driving a bargain yet when he stared one in the face (Stekelenberg from AJAX) for a mere 4 million quid, he ran for cover! Stekelenberg was the best keeper on view at the World Cup and he also has age on his side. Last season, BMT costy us dearly as far as goalkeepers were concerned and now we face playing in the Champions League without a world class keeper! Oh, and Wenger does us no favors either by making Almunia "captain" from time to time!

to Danny Bland, while Clayton probably isnt premier league class and will probably never be the same class as the likes of City''s first team he would probably suit league 1 atm but hes not in league 1 hes in the championship! and in claytons defence he is only 21, not forgetting lescott was playing in the championship with wolves until he was 24. I am agreed that robinho was a great sale because the longer City would have held onto him the less you would''ve got for him, despite his potential. Birmingham have done well to establish themselves as a premier league club and their transfers reflect that. I actually agree about Almunia he is a good keeper, albeit not a premier league winning keeper. However Mannone is not close to that standard yet, he stepped up for a few games but only because they were cup finals to him, Theres a good reason wenger replaced him when his keepers got back to fitness and Mannone would benefit from a good loan.

To Steve Wright (Chelsea Fan), you obviously haven''t seen some of these players play and don''t understand that there is football outside of Chelsea and Man Utd. Not all clubs are lucky enough to be owned by a billionaire who will fast track their success so we have to make do with signing players who can consolidate their position then move forward with players who have more quality that what we have, as we have done by buying Hleb, giving him the opportunity of proving himself in the Premier League again. Blues were difficult to beat last year, while not playing the most attractive football in the league, and got results, which is the main reason we are in the Prem this season. This is just as valid a tactic as playing the high-priced goal laden football we''re seeing at the Bridge at the moment. Mourinho played some of the most boring football seen in the Prem since it''s inception but he got results and I do believe he''s regarded as some sort of deity with your fans. Also, having seen DJ Campbell play in the Prem, I believe he is a decent signing for Blackpool as he''s quick and tricky and will cause defences problems. No he may not bag them 30 goals, but he may get them 7-10, which for a team like Blackpool can mean the difference between staying up and being relegated.
