Arsenal won't be able to cope with Chelsea, says Paul Merson... especially with Manuel Almunia in goal.

Having read all the comments, I like to share my view. I believe Arsenal have got talented players including goal keepers. From the performances I have seen, it seem there is no competition for places on the arsenal squad as such players become complacent every time the play one successful match. Most of the arselnal squad positions are not strongly contested. Until Arsene can allow serious competition and rotation amongst his players, there will always be complacency. For instance, Arshavin does not have to play every match until he gets injured same for Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas and etc. This also is the one of the reasons for the long list of injury in the Arsenal squad.

Has it not ocurred to anybody that chelsea are crumbling beaten by Newcastle 4-3 in the Carling Cup and losing 1-0 to Manchester City and to me they look a shadow of a premier league winning side the first real tests that they have they lose united wouldn,t have lost to either of those teams and the Chelsea V Arsenal game will be intresting because if Arsenal defend well then they will win because Chelsea look weak at the back and Cech is all over the place so with this in mind this is my score Prediction Chelsea 0 - 3 Arsenal Arshavin 2, Nasri

One day 2 go before the young gunners prove the critics wrong once again. Mr Merson i respect your view 100% but ive learned that with the Gunners on the day no matter if our top striker and influentiol Captain is not there that with the winning mentallity and positive attitute mr Chamake will definately finnish the service he will get from Jack and if Diaby believes his better that Viera and plays simular like he did we can definately get the 3points against the defending Champions. God help us if Fabiansky can just repeat his performance like midweek and not be scared by Drogbas big physique.

Arsenal''s problems are not just down to the goalie. They are perceived to have a lightweight midfield and so every team that plays them tries to out muscle them and generally succeed, with injuries to players trying to compete inevitable. They could do with a couple of strong midfield ball winners to take the heat from their ball players when the need arises.

am not convinced with or by your pessism.its not the keeper who controls the whole field. you have sung alot the same clitches, don''t you think so? how can you stop shots into your net when your leftbacb(clitche) carries 5kg on his legs which barr him from clearing balls, but to pass it to bent to equalize? we need areshuffle in the defence, but not the keeper, even the so called top goalies you are singing make mistakes, iknow you are agood manager on paper but can not even manage a small team here in uganda. having agood goalie is acompliment to success, Arsenal used to concede but their scoring rate with superb.do you want almunia to force ashavin at 29 to convert his wasted chances into goals? why should we keepon calling rosicky a senior who replaced either pires or l''berg but cannot even score 4 goals a season? i like your arguments but stop piling it on almunia or fab''ski, but the so called mature players should up their game. i disagree with your prediction, arsenal will win this game at all cost, but am seeing injuries and redcards in this game,as the beauty will contrast the urgly. 2-1 in favor of arsenal, one will be apenality and the other will be awonderful score by one of the new additives into the arsenal squad(wil, vela, chamakh, but not ashv.)

Goal keeper talk aside ..1 player is not a team ..The fact that we are missing our spine by that I mean TV, CF and RVP the cards are against us.. Merse , you should know better than to over estimate a team who are not unbeatable.. Chelsea are a good side but they are no "INVINCIBLES"... Wenger has made a great signing in MC, Wilshire has also stepped up, Ramsey will be back and next years UEFA financial rules will certainly change things in the PL... ..all you impatient gunners losing faith .. Tut tut !!!!!! .... start getting behind your team get off your seats and start making some noise!

Well Merse, as much as I would love Chelsea lose to Arsenal, I can''t really see that happening. Chelsea seem to have Aesenal''s number because of the pace and power of Drogba, Malouda, Essien & Co. Arsenal''s fragile defence cannot handle Chelsea''s power. Having said that, Arsenal shouldn''t be underestimated as they can beat any team on their day. I don''t think it will be a rout as everyone thinks. If Arsenal take the game to Chelsea and play without fear, they could come away with all 3 points. That''s what teams do when going to the Bridge, teams get intimidated by Chelsea and get hammered in the process. They ARE beatable provided the opposition show no fear. If Arsenal play to their potential and play with no fear they should win 2-1. They key is Fabregas missing for Arsenal. He is the heart and soul of the Gunners. Which Gunner will step up? We''ll have to wait and see. My prediction, Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1. It woun''t be because Arsenal aren''t good enough to win, it could come down to a referee decision in Chelsea''s favour. Sorry Gunners!!!

For too long Arsenal have waited for their youngsters to grow up, well now they are there and I think most Arsenal fans are realising they are not that good. Dong, Diaby, Denilson, and Nasri are good but not great. The only star they have is Cesc and VP when he is playing. They are too weak and blame injuries for everything. Drogba loves these games and I cant see him not scoring. If we get our game going it could be a real embarrasing day for the Gunners faithful.

I agree arsenal will not win the league this year and we need a keeper and arsene wenger is walking the tight rope between belief and stubborness but for some of these comments to say that arsenal are crumbling and teams like west brom are going to beat us regularly are insane, pure ignorance from fans of their team but not of the game itself as well. Arsenal are consitent, we consitently finish in the top four and fail to finish first BOOM BOOM!!

Agreed - Arsenal really need a keeper if they''re going to challenge Chelski and Man U&C. A truly ideal option is right there at City sitting on the bench: Shay Given. The only real problem is that city can afford to sell him for less if it means he goes to a team thats less likely to challenge them (and they probably will).

Over the course of the season the guy in goal will have a big impact on the stats, and will have played a huge part in whether or not we''ll win the league... but we''re not talking about the league, we''re talking about an away fixture on Sunday the 3rd of October. 11 men v 11 men and we''re more than capable of beating Chelski. For me, there are more pressing concerns than our weak link (the goalie), and that''s keeping players fit. We''re currently missing our three best players (Cesc, van Persie and Vermaelen), plus the likes of Theo, Bendtner, Ramsey and Gibbs. This doesn''t happen at other clubs... WHY??? United would only have to miss Rooney for a month or so and their title hopes would be gone. Chelski may need one or two more injuries than just Drogba to damage their title hopes, but try taking out their best three players, their in form winger, their up and coming strikers, AND THEN ask them to play in a London derby away from home... they would lose! Merson really needs to hit the books and pull out a wider veriety of stats instead of just doing all he can to put his anti-Almunia agenda on to every reader. Our inconsistency in recent seasons has been more a result of our constant injuries, not youth or inexperience, and not goal keeping howlers!

Agree with Karl Bloomfield. If we played this game very day for a month I dont think we''d win. Our defence is so disorganised we dont stand a chance agaist the movement of Chelski, it''s sad to say but I cant see where the next trophy will come from...

I''m an Arsenal supporter for over 20 years and I predict a 4:0 thrashing for my beloved Gooners. Chelsea are far too ruthless and are willing to stretch the rules in order to get their win. Arsenal aren''t.

I think the outcome depends on which attitude Chelsea take from the kick off, they were far too casual against City last week and paid the price. It won''t happen again on Sunday, all they need to do is keep Arshavin quiet, game over.

i really dont see us getting out with anything on sunday maybe just a point . i think that the best keeper we have have is vito mannone he played one game in the prem last season against fulham and he was amazing . wenger should make mannone second choice keeper and see how he does !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

arsenal play a wonderful game with the ball. They are shocking without the ball. How often do u see sliding tackles, backtracking etc.Essien is like 2players in1.Alongside him Mikel ramires(steel midfield) 4-5-1 strictly to beat them.Ferguson will tell u that. Id like to see a us mixing it up passin an crosses.Chamak is a major threat in the air.Be interesting.Chelsea can be beaten period. Every player needs to know his defensive duty,Pep brought that to barca.Emulated in the spanish team. The tactic..... Scrap with chelsea 4 75 min. they will get tired. Then up the tempo with a fluid passing game.... 2-1 arsenal

Ill have to say if chelsea put ont heir boots, they will win this quite easily and comfortably. We have back our pace in midfield but were still lacking a true scorer in lampard. The goals will have to come from the front line again with dider and malouda the likely ones to score and anelka ringing the post. It will be down to chelsea''s finishing, Essien has hit the post numerous times this season already so im just hoping he can start the scoring in the prem league and keep it going throughout. Raimres should also put on his boots as I know he has some pretty good scoring ability as well.

whether you agree with me or not, we need a goalie and maybe two more experience players if we are to win the league this year. And as of chelsea game God knows cause they are very strong and have been strong for Arsenal for the past years. so Plizzzzzzzzzzzz Mr Wenger do some thing. we trust you but have start losing it...

Chris Willmott (Arsenal fan) says...

Totally agree, we really need a new Keeper. I''m a season ticket holder and there is no one down the Emerites who thinks Arsenal can win the league without a new keeper. Also, I''d just like to add we are very unlucky with injuries! No Theo, Tommy V, Cesc or RVP. If Cheski lost there four best players then we''d prob be favourites to take the points. Oh how I''d love to have Viera back (just for this one)
