Can't believe Merson thinks the players don't need coaching. Clearly, they aren't top drawer players as he says. I think we need to think about football in England, clearly, there is a problem. The Germans played a far superior game, including the system and positions. interestingly, the Germans didn't play anyone out of position. England had no balance to them, square pegs in round holes. Players still play no matter how bad they are, in the team on reputation rather than experience, dropping a few of the so-called top drawer players may have given the kick-up the backside they needed. Rooney is a prime example, he was worse than bad!

what was going through Capello's mind to even take Heskey, Crouch and Barry. Heskey wasn't even getting in the Villa side so why should of got picked and the same for Crouch, Barry wasn't fit didn't training in the camp, how must Scotty Parker and Tom Huddlestone feel like after that. Now we all know pace scares defenders so why didn Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor the both would of got behind the defence the you would of had Rooney in the box with Lampard and Gerrard getting into the box with late runs mainly where they score goals. One more player we should of took Ashley Young he has scary pace can play left or right without trouble and been bette than Shaun Wright Phillips and Aaron Lennon for 2-3 seasons, Rant over but for me capello has to go didnt pick the right squad and never picked the right teams, we should of won that group with ease and other counrties would'nt of wanted to play us

Capello has to go for sure because most of his tactics are now out dated etc also out must go all them that are getting near 30 yrs old, as we need now to be bringing in the young players and getting them used to playing as a TEAM and not as individuals, we were rubbish against Germany they totally outclassed us in every department, and as for all them who are backing capello to stay,, please wake up and smell the coffee, things are going to change watch this space.

Agreed on every point merse, Fabio must go. he did not the balls to send on more attcking players towards the end of the Germany game and Waited too long in other matches. Stevie G is not a wide left played and if we are going to the best out of what him and some of the other players like Lampard, we need to start playing them in the right postion's. Start bringing the youth through, Adam Johnson for example. a LEFT footed LEFT sided player.

Redknapp would be an ok manager but from the comments hes made on the highlight shows it seems he loves his own club players too much. For example after the slovenia game he still thought that Lennon would be better on the wing than Milner but Milner in my opinion is Englands best player not only on the right but he can play defence attack or midfeild even in internationals.

Nick Baker has got it absolutely spot on...its down to the way football is being tought to the kids. English players lack the flair and technique of the spanish, portugese, brazilians etc. Even Wayne Rooney who is supposedly Englands most gifted player is a million miles from the likes of messi and ronaldo! Things have to change and fast, something needs to be done to lower the amount of foreigners allowed playin in the premier league and give the young players a chance or england will end up like italy!

All in all... England were awful... truly awful. And for me i believe it wouldn't have been the case if we had a few different players... For instance, SWP is absolutely useless... against USA he was the worst player on the pitch by far and it was only Robert Greens mistake that took him out of the spotlight! We have Adam Johnson sat at home - a youngster with immense talent who can actually run at defenders, take them on and then put in a good cross! He should have been in. Also, we had 2 of the best players around sat at home aswell. Paul Scholes is one of the best midfielders of his generation, and yes, ok he declined and said he might have come if he'd have been asked earlier, but he would still have made a huge difference - unlike Barry who, as usual, did nothing at all! Then there's Owen Hargreaves.... He was voted Englands best player at the 2006 World Cup. His energy levels and work rate are off the scale and his tackling and set pieces are awesome. Ok, i know he's only played 20 secs off football in 18 months but at the end of the day, i believe that if he had been on the pitch against Germany the outcome would have been way different. Barry, Carrick & SWP shouldn't have gone! Lastly... Gerrard is one of the best centre mids in the world... so lets play him on the left! Isn't that why Scholes retired in the first place - cos he was been played there to make way for Lampard!!! I know im a Man U fan and so it could be seen as biased with Hargreaves and Scholes, but bias aside, those 2 are absolutely awesome. WOW - ok rant over now. Lastly, Capello should go - and Harry Redknapp is the best shout by far... and i reckon he'd take it as it's one thing missing from his cv - and he can't have long left in the managerial game...

Merse is so right get Harry Redknapp in now, every thing was so wrong Capello said he would take fit, inform players playing week in week out for there clubs, Carragher, Heskey, Green bad season, King, Lennon, SWP have hardly kicked a ball all season, A Johnson Young, K Davies Parker + Bent all good seasons and over looked, the biggest thing i can't understand and and rest of the country think the same apart from the person who gets the England job is Heskey is PANTS as merse said a striker should score goals, Bent and Crouch can hold the ball up well and score goals there records show that, give Capello his money and get Harry in with maybe Becks supporting him the players really respect both of them.

Wheels upon wheels.same old story. All of us crying for a change forgetting that it takes time to reap from what we sow.We should give Fabio time.In two years, if he doesn't deliver,we will be all square.don't give him reason to be jittery and make more mistakes.fred

I'm sick of people saying ''Oh we need an English manager''. Hello do you remember Graham 'turnip head' Taylor and Steve 'wally with a brolly' McClaren? Both English managers that failed to manage us to even qualify for a major tournament. We don't need a new manager. I remember everyone saying that ''If Capello can't win England the World Cup then no one can.'' and now he has failed everyone is saying get rid of him. If he can't vriong us success then nobody can. What the problem is is the players. We've got a lot of big name players and people are scared to drop them. Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney were awful in the World Cup. The only criticism I can have for Capello is that he enver plays Gerrard in the middle, if he did he's play better.. For me I'd have played: James, Johnson, Carragher, Terry, Cole, Lennon, Gerrard, Barry, Milner, Crouch and Defoe. Players like Rooney and Lampard take their places for granted. If they lost their positions in the team it may make them more determined to play better.

VIDEO technology or not were england used to this happening really i had to be something controversial, if we et video technology in i bet we end up losing a big game because of it, wouldn't shock me at all, and as for capello get the english man in give what the country wants if we wrong its our own fault let it be a natinal vote!!!

Paul, supposing Harry gets the job. In what sort of condition do you think the next Spurs manager will deliver up their Champions League defenders like Dawson and King? Fit and healthy, or drained and crocked? Good Old 'Arry has done England no favours whatsoever this year so how can he expect any better support in future campaigns. Should Capello go first? I think No, not just yet. He should join a long queue at the exit and follow some of those who would otherwise decide the future England manager. I think a much deeper inquiry is required that includes Capello and, sadly, must also include Sir Trevor Brooking's role in charge of football development. The game played in England is good but the development of genuine footballers in England (people like yourself, James Milner, Robbie Fowler and Gazza) has been neglected once again in favour of beefed-up athletes. It is the balance and speed of thought that is so sadly missing not the strength, physique or gamesmanship. If nothing changes in that part of the FA then the development of a new squad will be constrained from the start. Who do you think should make the first move? The honourable Sir Trev.?

I really do not know what all the fuss is about, I could never see us going pass the quarterfinals ,fact is if Rooney plays well England play well the opposition know that, stop Rooney and you stop England its why other teams mark him so tightly, Heskey was brought on to free Rooney up,the trouble was the rest of the players were so poor except for James & A Cole. Cappello is the best manager since Ramsey it would be foolish to dispose of him, if there are any changes to be made it should be for Trevor Brooking to be made head of the FA, lets scrap the England team plus Scotland, Wales, & Northern Ireland, and go for a UK team at least it would have given the likes of Ryan Giggs and George Best the chance to play in the world cup.

I told myself I wasn't guna be 1 of those people who had a go at England if they underperformed, but when it comes down to it whether it be the manager or the over-paid pre-madonnas that call themselves England players we were pathetic. To critisize our quality is one thing, but the lack of passion by the vast majority of our players is far worse than that. I remember goin to support Burnley against Man Utd and as soon as the whistle blew and Burnley had the ball Rooney came steaming in and smashed one of our players to the ground and won the ball, England's "main man" did nothing of the sort for his country, where was his pride? Right now is bottom of the barrell, when we were last beat in the 2nd round in 98 they put in a heroic performance that warranted tears, here in South Africa we were cowards and a poor reflection on what our football used to represent.

Is it the fact that you cant handle mild criticism compared to the lambasting that Robert Green got from you and your other Vulture Friends. or is it that i do not subscribe to sky that resulted in my constructive criticism being omitted or censored out. Fact Brazil Chile Argentina are in a different universe from England Even after The Criticism that Brazil got from the media for their display against Portugal. they came out and played awesome against Chile. and Chile never gave up until the last minute. even after going 3 o behind they played with some pride. something that you and your media colleagues and supposed supporters knocked out of the England team. from the first minute of the first game. one question if you want to become the real world champions why would would it matter who you played some of your media colegues were moaning because England never won their section and Is it the fact that you cant handle mild criticism compared to the lambasting that Robert Green got from you and your other Vulture Friends. or is it that i do not subscribe to sky that resulted in my constructive criticism being omitted or censored out. The England team has been shown up for what they really are......AVERAGE FOOTBALLERS.... Paul Merson calls them 'TOP DRAWER' players????? Seriously?? It's fine for Lampard, Gerard, Rooney etc to be the big guns against Hull, Portsmouth and Wolves etc....but as far as world class players...no chance....You can blame the managers...fabio, mcclaren etc....but the payers havent changed....when are they gona start taking the blame...can't even belive Rooney was hailed as possibly the best striker in the world this year...he wouldn't even be fit to scrub Messi's boots!!!! Yes the Premier League is the best in the world...but it's because of the foreign players who come to it and make it what it is....You would say that most of those Germans wouldnt make the premierships best 11, that they are from average teams in an average league (bundesliga)...but the truth is...they've been coached in a way from youth level that makes them technically far superior than most English players.....The truth is that the English media hype the English players up stating that they are among the best in the world..when the truth is they're not...and by the way...the reason they hype them up is so they can rip them to shreds when they fail in big tournaments and sell papers....The people i feel sorry for are the ordinary punters who proabably saved every penny and borrowed money to go and watch players who get ridiculous amounts of cash and aren't worth half of their wage!!!! Rooney...150 grand+ a week....terry the same...gerrard the same...lampard the same....WHAT A JOKE!!! But at least they can sail off on their yachts for a nice warm holiday in Cannes or somewhere else while the normal supporter goes back to working 9-5........DISGRACEFUL!

As a Spurs fan I of course don't want Harry to leave, but as an England fan I know he would be great for the job. However, to recruit any other manager right now would be a waste of time for it's the whole England set-up from grass-roots that needs to be changed and given a kicked up the backside before we go on and ruin any more managerial careers... As has been said, it's not the only the managers, it's not simply the players, it's more the FA, with their unwillingness to get it right from youth-up. I think it's time that a rule be put in place that a minimum of 3 or 4 English players must start every Premier league game. Then you'd see the big boys scouring the land for English talent that may otherwise slip through the net, you'd see them improve their academies to bring on English boys to reach their best. Do this and maybe, say by 2022, we might be able to field a decent side capable of really challenging...

Zulfiqar Ali (Arsenal fan) says...

England team showed it has no skill or technical ability. Against lowly sides (with all due respect as they gave England run for their money) like USA, Algeria and Slovenia, they got away with it, but it was obvious from the outset. As a neutral I didn't want England to progress as they did not bring quality to the tournament as expected. The best England could have done was to be Greece but for that you need strict defensive discipline. English or Foreign, the problem lies deep in the youth development. Why do England have good shot stoppers but not intelligent sweepers, defenders to get the ball rolling (Pique & Lucio type) box to box midfielders to do the job all round the pitch in defence and attack (not position specific). Germany invests twice as much as England in its Youth Development and its evedent they are grooming highly skilled players to play intelligent disciplined football likewise Spain. England need to stop living in the past.

I think its more of the squad selections wat were heskey and wright phillips doing in the team. And the big players didnt turn up when needed i think only Gerrard tried standin up and defoe was better than rooney. Capello needs to go or totally learn how to change the morale of the team.

Embarrassing world cup for England, very hesistant seemed like they were too scared to have a go at other teams. If I had one question to ask in a news conference with the England staff would be why the hell they brought on heskey towards the end when we needed three goals,It is just beyond me. The whole set up is a shambles, should have players who actually want to put there heart and soul in playing for there country, under 21s would of done better. And I agree with the idea of each premiership team having six Home grown players in each starting line up, because something needs to change or this will happen time and time again.
