Paul Merson looks at England's World Cup 30 and tells us who'll make it and who'll miss out...Back to story
Ifwe are going to win the world cup this has got to be the team Hart, johnson rio terry cole, barry (holding) lennon lampard milner A johnson and rooney up front on his own. if crouch and walcott start we are not going anywhere. for starters international refs hate crouch climbing on peoples backs and call fouls on him all the time. hes also got no pace and cant even reall head the ball properly even tho hes 8 foot tall! and if walcott starts we will have to get used to losing possesion and crosses that go to row z! dont think anyones gone as backwards in football than thoe walcott! anyway COME ON ENGLAND!

I dont think emile heskey will make the team....Darren bent has played way better than he has this season. I'm an arsenal fan and I hope walcott makes the squad but I've always been a long time admirer of shawn wright phillips.....he's good on the ball and has got good pace...i really dont see walcott better than he is....I hope SWP even comes to arsenal next season lol....

Watching the England game Vs Japan yesterday it made me think England have no hope of winning the world cup. Okay there were some inclusions that were not first choice players but together as a team they just cant play, they have the quality as players, but as a team there just a bunch of headless chicken running around the pitch. Anybody who rates Theo Walcott as a player should take a good look at themselves, he is a rubbish and without his pace he would be a disaster of a footballer. IUf anybody in an England shirt gave a good account of themselves it was Joe Hart, never hidfes when on the pitch and has that desire needed to win the world cup. My Starting 11 would be. GK. Hart DEF. Carragher DEF Ferdinand DEF. Terry DEF. Cole MID. Cole MID. Lampard MID. Barry MID. Wright Phillips MID. Gerrard FWD Rooney.

Capello has mentioned that he has already selected his team to go to South Africa and if what we see is correct its quite obvious who it is.. GK - Hart James Green ( quite obvious u know) Def - Ferdinand Terry Carragher King Cole Johnson Baines Mid - Gerrard Cole Lampard Walcott Lennon Milner Barry ( pending injury) A Johnson Carrick Fwd - Rooney Crouch Defoe Heskey

Personally, Joe Hart has been immense this season, so much better than the other two, and he should be our first choice kepper. He makes good saves when it really matters, and that's what we need in a keeper. Walcott and Lennon are also musts. To have that pace in 2 players as an option will do absolute wonders for our squad. Especially if we can take off a tired Walcott after 70 minutes and replace him with a fit Lennon. Adam Johnson is always impressive but I'm not sure if he's experienced enough. I also think Darren Bent would make a better contribution than Heskey after what he's done this season, and I also agree with Merson on Joe Cole. Here's my squad: GK - Hart DEF - G Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole MID - Gerrard, J Cole, Lampard, Walcott FW - Rooney, Bent SUBS - Green, James, Carragher, King, Baines, Dawson, Barry, Milner, Lennon, Wright-Phillips, Crouch, Defoe

Usually not very good, but this time think merson might actually have the 23 right. Dont think its the right 23. would not take walcott he cant even square a football. think he will take carrick or huddlestone instead of parker. even though i think parker has been he only good thing about west ham united. gary neville is terrible aswell.

my england 23 would be (GK) JAMES, HART,GREEN (DEF) A COLE, FERDINARD, TERRY, BAINES, KING, UPSON, (MED) LAMPARD, GERRARD, LENNON, BARRY, DAWSON,PARKER, J COLE, WRIGHT-PHILLIPS, (STRIKERS) MILNER, HESKEY, ROONEY,CROUCH, DEFOE WALCOTT
Posted 00:54 31st May 2010
Why are you all slating heskey! he isn't in the team to score goals (i know he is a striker but thats not his strength) Unless you have all forgot heskey and rooney together are a force to be reckon with rooney scored 9 goals in qualifing playing with heskey. It works that should be it, heskey doesn't usually get the chance to score in games anyway because rooney is there. Bringing crouch or defoe on in the second half is a better option because of defoe pace against tiring legs and crouch is extrodinary height will scare defenders. With the squad i feel the 7 dropped will be warnock, dawson, huddlestone, parker, wright phillips, carrick and bent. I don't actually agree with the exclusion of parker or dawson but feel there lack of experience is the main reason. Adam johnson i dont think has played because he is our secret weapon. He has been getting rave reviews from training and i feel they are ready to unleash him in the world cup. If everyone plays to there abilitys we can win the world cup COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!

My Squad would be: Hart, Green, James, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole, G Johnson, Carragher, King, Dawson, Baines, Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Milner, Lennon, Walcott, J Cole, A Johnson, Rooney, Heskey, Crouch, Defoe My Starting XI: Hart, A Cole, Terry, Ferdinand, G Johnson, Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Lennon, Rooney, Crouch I do think though he will start with James in net which is great however I'd risk it and give Hart a chance.

Must get Barry fit to have a chance. Prize asset Rooney to be given free roll in 3, 4, 3. formation. Team, Joe Hart. Rio Ferdinand, Gareth Barry, John Terry. Glen Johnson, James Milner, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole. Wayne Rooney. Please no injurys, these are the only players to win it, thats why the other 12 players are imaterial. Think, play and stay positive and we may with a bit of luck win it.

looking at mersons team on who will go i would agree with apart from him saying that Heskey should go everybody always talks about what Heskey always contributes to the forward line when he is playing for England and Villa and there is no other striker like him and they are absolute right he contributes no goals what so ever and i can see it now Heskey playing in a important game for England in the world Cup and him wasting chances and possibly costing them a chance of winning, Carlton Cole , Bobby Zamora Peter Crouch can all do what Heskey does and score goals also its a joke that he is even included in the 30 man squad it would be a joke if Bent got left out for him, also if Upson gets in instead of Dawson it would be a joke too they both played all season and Dawsons spurs got into champions league and west ham was lucky to stay up so it is quite clear who is the better defender.
Posted 21:24 30th May 2010
i think that after todays display, that hart should start as number 1, terry is crap all season and is an accident waiting to happen, ferdinand isnt fully fit, he badly needs game time, the last 2 performances were shocking and i really dont fancy your chances there, the only thing that have me clinging with hope for a good tournament is your manager,i would say you have only 4 or 5 players going to the world cup in top form, rooney, johnson, crouch, hart and milner...second round defeat to ghana or serbia is my prediction and im not saying that to annoy anyone, its just im a massive football fan and have always taken an interest in england, and i just feel that the team isnt strong
Posted 20:56 30th May 2010
Yes, lets just let Gerrard walk into the team, he has consistenly proven his worth. He should be omitted...Lampard is 100 times better than Gerrard and has proven it via goals and assists season after season. Can't argue with the facts and the fact is Gerrard just isn't good enough.

Don't take Heskey, Take Bent!
Posted 18:02 30th May 2010
what a terrible performance yet again.what is it about being scared of attacking football.get out and attack these teams, surely its better entertaining paying public and having a bit of pride.give them a shirt they are proud to wear instead of mirrors for them to look at themselves.not a chance of winning the world cup,not good enough
