Paul Merson looks at England's World Cup 30 and tells us who'll make it and who'll miss out...Back to story
My starting eleven would be (GK) Hart (D) Johnson Terry Ferdinand A Cole (M) J Cole Gerrard (Capt.) Lampard Lennon (F) Rooney Heskey. Barry is never going to be 100 % fit but should be given time and be picked in the squad. Lennon's got more of a final ball then the other wide players. Joe Hart has been outstanding all season and as for James he belongs to the pantomime season as the court jester, totally comical! Joe Cole has been there and seen it and has that special talent the others don't . Heskey could'nt hid water if fell out of a boat but scoring goals is not what he's picked for it's his physical strength and hold up play and the amount of goals in that midfield four should compensate that.

Barry is injured! He shouldn't be going and if he comes back from injury to play in the world cup finals is plain stupid, it can seriously backfire for him, Capello and England's chance of winning the world cup for the first time in 44-ish years. England should play an attacking 4-5-1 formation similar to how Liverpool were playing towards the end of the season with Gerrard playing as a CM and Lampard playing more attacking as he does so well for Chelsea. Emile Heskey SHOULD NOT have been chosen! His Goals to Game Ratio is worse than the majority of other England World Cup Candidates. Michael Owen had a better Ratio and he is a player that is always going to score goals, it is what he does naturally. Why he is not in the Thirty above Heskey is beyond me and for Merson to put him in his 23-man squad proves that he is a useless 'pundit'. In my opinion, Carrick is a good player, Sir Alex Ferguson(the most accomplished manager in club football) trusts Michael Carrick enough to not bring in a better holding midfielder from abroad, proving therefore that he is good enough to be in the England side ahead of Gareth Barry. Owen Hargreaves, however, is the best CDM. Next season united have a great player back from injury fully fit and I envy them, I wish he was fit enough to go to the world cup, STAR MAN!!! Gk - Joe Hart(Starter), Robert Green and David James Def - Glen Johnson(Starter), Rio Ferdinand (Starter), John Terry(Starter), Ashley Cole(Starter), Jamie Carragher, Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Leighton Bains Mid - Shaun Wright-Phillips(Starter), Steven Gerrard(Starter), Michael Carrick(Starter), Frank Lampard(Starter), Joe Cole(Starter), James Milner, Adam Johnson and Theo Walcott Cf - Wayne Rooney(Starter), Jermain Defoe, Darren Bent and Peter Crouch/Scott Parker(taking Theo Walcott as a Cf if need be. COME ON ENGLANDDDDD!!!!!

Is Gerrard fit enough for the World Cup? I think he hides an injury, & appears to hide for much of the game except when taking corners & free kicks. One of the old guard who should stay in the UK & get fit for next season. If he goes, watch out for one of his classic pass backs.

englands last 2 games were shocking based on those performances the likes of germany brazil argentina italy etc etc..... would tear us to pieces we would be lucky to get through the group stages!!!! Anyway i also believe England has the potential to win it BUT they simply lack passion and confidence if they played with half the passion and confidence during the premiership teams like mexico and japan would be a walk over

rooney milner lennon gerrard lampard barry ashley cole glen johnson ferdinand terry james subs: hart, green, king dawson baines parker walcott cole crouch defoe bent mayb adam johnson or another young one possibly one to play in middle of midfield damn im right
Posted 14:48 30th May 2010
Rio ferdinand is the most over rated centre back in football a think titus bramble would do a better job than him..neville shouldnt even be considerd neither should heskey as he should have retired a good few years ago.darren bent shouldnt go either as he cant perform under pressure.
Posted 13:57 30th May 2010
joe hart, glen johnson, terry ferdinand ashley cole, lennon gerrard, lampard joe cole. drop barry hes terrible. rooney crouch up front. easy pick for me.
Posted 12:27 30th May 2010
I dont know why you english are even considering putting Emile Heaskey in, whos scored a pitiful amount of goals and a poor season all round, ahead of Darren Bent, who has scord 20+ goals and has single-handedly kept Sunderland in the premiership, its absoulutly ludicrous,
Posted 12:10 30th May 2010
I think one of the strongest squads we've had for years, and in Capello one of the best coaches, he will pick right team for each game and not just because of who the player is..... Come on England :)
Posted 10:29 30th May 2010
I still can't see any reason why Theo even managed to make the 30-squad. Now reading that he could also make the 23-squad and travel to the WC makes me wonder. I usually don't bash any Arsenal-player and have always been a fan of Theo, but he doesn't deserve to be there. Too many injuries and less than a handfull of good performances. Apart from that, it would be a surprise to see him starting ahead of Lennon. He'd been injured as well, but overall he had a better season than Theo. However, I hope Theo proves me wrong.
Posted 22:29 29th May 2010
Apart from Dawson and Johnson, i think that is the correct squad to take. Capello doesnt need 5 centre backs and Johnson would offer something different as a winger than the other "speedsters" have (more natural talent). Glad you included Parker. Every other major nation is including specific holding players in their team (De Rossi, Gilberto, De Jong, Toulalan, Mascherano) and you cant win without one, remember Nobby Stiles?

I agree with almost all of the picks but has Defoe done enough lately, he didn't produce against Mexico mid-week and i'm not sure he's a team player. Unfortunately he's the only small nippy player in the squad but I still prefer Bent. Heskey doesn't score enough and is injury prone so maybe Bent & Defoe. Carrick has had a poor season so I was surprised he was in the squad and he didn't do himself any favours against Mexico with his wayward passing. I still can't believe Upson is touted as a good defender and was sitting behind Ferdinand & Terry for a place. He is just not good enough everytime I watch him he gets turned or caught out of position etc, is it just me. Rooney can't play with Defoe, Crouch or Heskey so give Bent a go!!!!!
Posted 17:34 29th May 2010
My squad would be Gk: Hart (1st choice), James, Robinson Def; Cole, baines, Johnson, G.Neville,King,Shawcross,Ferdinard,Terry Midfield: Joe Cole,Adam Johnson,Milner,Barry,Hargraves,Gerrard,Lampard,Lennon strikers: Rooney,Defoe,Bent,Crouch
Posted 14:49 29th May 2010
Please no, not Peter Crouch. Watched him play for Aston Villa reserves reserves against Newcastle reserves about 10 years ago and swore he was the worst striker i'd ever seen. Not much has changed since. Spain, Brazil etc will be laughing there socks off.
Posted 03:57 29th May 2010
adam johnston should go instead of joe cole as i think he has a little bit more spark and cole has been injured for a long time this year . as for bent he is head and shoulders above heskey, for 1 fact he scores and thats what you need to win a world cup........ leave heskey behind
Posted 21:21 28th May 2010
why the hell is heskey in there, bent scored goals for fun this season at sunderland! heskey couldnt score goals for villa! bobby zamora should have been given a chance to shine rather than heskey proving how awful of a striker he actually is...AGAIN!
Posted 21:16 28th May 2010
My line-up would be: GK James LB Cole RB Johnson CB Terry, Ferdinand LM Gerrard RM Milner CM Barry, Lampard ST Rooney and Bent
Posted 20:29 28th May 2010
I am am originally from England and have watched the premier league for years. My heart is with England and I hope we kick some butt this world cup. I have to comment on Frank Lampard. Of all the disappointing games and tears I have shead for my home country I can not understand why he is in the starting eleven. He has done nothing in an England shirt, but agree he performs at his club side. Isnt there another midfielder that can challenge his spot. I am tired of watching him miss the oppertunities that he has had. I am not a supporter of him in the line up. Go England Go
Posted 18:09 28th May 2010
Parker should be get his chance against Japan, He kept West Ham up and is a good striker of the ball, still not sure about Green being first choice, Walcott, Lennon and Wright-Phillips should all go, Carrick should make way he does not quiet have it and looked out of place against Mexico
