Anything but Crouch up front. Yep, he scores goals against the weaker teams but when put up against a half decent team he is ineffective. Against Mexico in the first half his lack of movement meant that England were too predictable. He cannot hold the ball up and only ever passes the ball backwards, when receiving it with his back to goal, putting the team under more pressure. He is a good option from the bench but if he starts i think we have no chance. Rooney should be up front with Defoe or by himself with Gerrard just behind and a 5 man midfield (2 wingers - A Johnson and Walcott).

Emile Heskey: 3 goals all season. Darren Bent: 25 goals all season. If Bent doesn't go, he might as well give up. Defenders have scored more goals than Heskey this season - Danny Butterfield scored the same amount in one game! Agree about Neville - I never rate Merson's opinion and what he says about Neville just confirms my view of him as a pundit.

I was informed last night by a so called Arsenal Fan (who's been to Fulham more times this season to see decent European football) that if England play 4-4-2 we would be okay. Surely if we play 3-5-1-1 we could fill the midfield with the best talent in the world and cruise to the last 4. Ever since 1996 (when we last played this formation) we are reverted back to the good old english 4-4-2 mentality, that doesnt work anymore as teams like Spain, Brazil and....... yes even Germany have got other ideas. Play 3-5-1-1 Fabio and I think we have a good chance play 4 at the back, then we will be lucky with a last 16. COME ON YOU THREE LIONS!!

Just a couple of thoughts!!!!! Boris the Chelsea fan, its funny that your 2 key issues with the England team are prob the 2 strongest area's for Spain, Casillas in Goal and Torres and Villa up-front? And lets not forget the worst thing that could happen in football.......BRAZIL HAVE GOT A WORLD CLASS KEEPER, and John Bell the LIverpool supporter, dont be bitter with team selection like that its no wonder Liverpool finished 7th, are you sure your not Rafa in disguise. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!

I always find it hard to take anyone seriously who suggests Gary Neville should play for England. Especially now, when he has hardly played for years, and is Man Utd's third best full back behind Brown and O'Shea. Crouch has to be first name (along with Rooney) on the team sheet - Rooney has struggled to play on his own up front for England, and Crouch invariably delivers. Terry has been dire even since before the revelations, so he wouldn't make my first XI. Also, although I'd probably play Lampard, unless he starts bringing his Chelsea form to England, I'd play Gerrard as CM, and Milner as LM. GK: Green; RB: Johnson: CB: Carragher, Ferdinand; LB: A Cole; RM: Lennon; CM: Barry, Lampard; LM: Gerrard; CF: Rooney, Crouch.

Come Mr Merson and I quote Emile Heskey He hasn't done anything in the Premier League all season Jermain Defoe I'm a big fan of Defoe. He's gone off the boil a bit recently Darren Bent He's scored more than 20 Premier League goals for a team that didn't finish in the top half of the Premier League, and has scored more that double what Heskey has. So when Mr. Capello talks about taking inform players why take Heskey or Defoe ahead of Bent or is it just talk

i am from Deutchsland and i am that you can win the world cup. you have best squad and players to choose and you have the best league to choose players. rooney is very good and he give you magic. so will steven gerrard and frank lampard. i also think darren bent should be choose as he scores so many goals i watch your league and i like his team and if he scores that much he should be picked

I totally agree with Malcolm Bolton on 23 man squad. This is our strongest squad in my opinion. I am very positive about our chances and think we will get stronger as the tournament progresses. Bring it on U.S.A, June 12th can't bloody wait!! GK/ James, Green, Hart. DF/ Johnson, Carragher, Ferdinand, Terry, King, Cole, Baines. MF/ Gerrard, Milner, Barry, Lampard, Parker, Lennon, Walcott, Cole, Johnson. ST/ Rooney, Crouch, Defoe, Heskey.

As long as Joe Hart s first choice and walcotts a winger then the teams good
Posted 20:22 27th May 2010
sorry paul can't agree with picking parker instead of carrick. he spent two season's at newcastle most that time was going round in circles, and certainley can't pass a ball more than ten yards.and for cappello giving barry extra time to get fit(yes he is our best holding player) but i can see a similar scenario to the brian robson saga on the plane but lasting half a game or maybe breaking down in training. and as for heskey how on earth can you consider anyone who can't get a regular game and can't score goals.
Posted 19:51 27th May 2010
Why in the world didn't FC pick Ashley Young. We talk about needing someone with pace (like SWP, Lennon or Walcott) but can also cross well (like Becks). Well AY combines both. A big mistake by Fabio. The sooner we ditch Walcott as a winger or move him back into the middle, the better.

England can win as the two so-called favourites, Brazil and Spain are not as strong as in the past. Two key issues, goal-keeping and goals. I would choose James. We need a star performance from Rooney. If he plays up to expectations, England can beat anyone.

i cannot see that england side beeting anyboy let alone progressing into the knock out stages. too many players pickd bcoz their with big clubs eg. rio, carrick, carra, glen & jt.. consistant players lyk bobby Z and jagielka , gary cahill, shud be on the plane. XI .. GK hart RBphil neville CBjagielka CBcahill/dawson LBcole LMyoung CMmilner CMhargreaves/parker CMlampard RMlennon STrooney (p.s i know a couple ov them arnt in the 30 man panel, this is jst my opinon ov who shud be)

I dunno why no one has got Carra in the startin line-up, would defo pick him in the latter stages instead in Johnson as you can actually rely on him defensively... not saying this just because im a spurs fan but King is much better than Rio... Gerrard such defo be captain with Terry (dont care what he's done) vice and i dont know why the country has wrecked his confidence in world cup year - would never happen in ireland even if our expectations arent as high as yours.... as much as i hate to say this but england have - without doubt - the strongest 23 in the world cup, but when you look at the starting line-ups of spain, brazil and argentina (who england would hammer) i cant see them winning. Im predicting a Spain - Brazil final with england to finish third... and btw, i dunno why your all so afraid of portugal, completely different teams since they last played with England much stronger 1-11 bar ronaldo....

I was reliably informed last night by a so called Spurs fan (never goes to the Lane) that Spurs will do in 2010 what West Ham did in 1966 They have finally reached the qualifying stages of the Champions League, now they are going to win us the World Cup. Is Spurs the Latin translation of Optimism????
Posted 12:48 27th May 2010
My squad of 23 would be... GK - Green, Hart, James DF - G Johnson, Carragher, Ferdinand, Terry, King, Upson, A Cole, Warnock MF - Lennon, Barry, Gerrard, Lampard, Parker, Milner, J Cole, A Johnson FW - Rooney, Heskey, Defoe, Crouch

Agree with most. I think people like Adam Johnson and Scott Parker should get a start against Japan, because there is no point putting them in your provisional squad, and then not seeing how good they play in a match situation, so give them some game time. I predicted all the scores for the WC and should (sorry, when) we win our group, we should get Ghana in the second round, France in the QF, Brazil in the semis, and then Spain in the final. Shame we don't get Germany or Portugal, otherwise we would annihilate them!! COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
