Capello has got to play a 4-5-1 with rooney as lone striker. And u have to play gerrard in his natural position which will be just off rooney.. i suggest bring joe cole for the penetration and carrick for the thru passes and make lampard sit hus had horrible games.

Lots of comment about Capello here - informing the team who's playing 2 hours before, playing the wrong formation etc. Although I, along with virtually everyone else who has commented believe 4-5-1 with Joe Cole playing is the best way forwards, the 11 players on the pitch need to look at themselves over the way they played the last 2 games. Cappello is a top class coach winning a huge amount of Trophies in Italy (when it was a top class league) and Spain and his methods haven't changed since he was the AC Milan coach. This current crop of players however have always underperformed for England (save qualifying for this tournament). Perhaps our England giants look so good in the Premier Leauge because of the foreign players who are their teamates? Torres, Essien, Alonso last season and ditto for Ronaldo maybe make the difference. We were never going to win this anyway, we delude ourselves, quarter or semi's if we get going and a South American team to lift the trophy.

I can't believe in this day and age England with an Italian Coach is still playing route one football (boom kick football)... you cannot expect anything better than what you are seeing now. the mere fact that capello picked Heskey and Crouch suggest that it's boom the ball to the big man he will head it on to the out of form Rooney to Score.... rubbish i say. when is an england coach going to pick an in form player/s to go to a world cup? what happen to Darren Bent ? that is where the problem started, the options up front are so limited it's not funny. how? how could you leave home a man that scored 20+ goal this season? it's beyond me.... Maybe Capello has the Inter job in his sights... hmm..

I couldn't agree more with Gary Agnew. England team is well overrated. The media too help them to look good. Lampard should be dropped. He tried to prove he's a better player than Gerrard. Not quite yet. Gerrard must be the commanding midfielder. We need some dribblers on wednesday. So pls put this line-up, James, Johnson, Terry, Upson, A Cole, Barry, J Cole, Milner, Gerrard, Defoe, Rooney. Come on England.

I just want to know why Ashely Young never got a look in when I feel he is our best winger and the only winger with a decent cross.... SWP, why is he even in the world cup? People calling for Theo, to be fair, I wont even have him in the England team either...

These England players dont realy care deep down. They are overpaid ,overhyped, and with massive egos. why should they care, they willcome home to their multi mullion pound houses, wonder for a few minutes about which one of their £80,000+ cars to get into, then continue to draw their £100,000+ weekly salary, whilst the poor fans will have wasted their hard earned wages on them yet again. Oh and dont forget the WAGs who will only be anxious about if their man might loose some of his spending power

Comments read are all good and sincere, however without the desire, the passion and desire to win for England at all costs, any 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 or any other formation are going nowhere. It is my belief from watching the past two games the players for whatever reason, whether it be coaching, the high salaries or some other reason have lost their intensity and belief to win the world cup. All the players need to look in to the mirror and convince themselves they are proud Englishmen and do whatever it takes at all costs. We have the players, now go out on Wednesday and prove you have the ability to represent the three lions.

Geoff Potts (West Ham United fan) says...

in my view our hopes cant be pinned on just rooney.. as in my opinion he is not such a world class player.. yes i agree to score as many goals he did is an amzing achievement.. but he is only as good as the service he gets such as crosses which was shown by how many headed goals he got this year (which was almost 10) and through balls etc.... whereas compare him to messi and even though he is the greatest player atm on the planet.. he can run though play ers at will and produce moments of pure magic which i cant see rooney doing on a constant basis.. and frm my memory argentina have scored 5 so far and messi has scored none of them.. this shows how much that argentina are a team rather than just a one man team... but with england we cant play the team round either rooney or gerrard but a system that suits all players... just look at the argentina team and look how they all fit into the system and how comfortable they look even swapping poisiting.. which btw andy townsend is a good ting as it shows how adaptable players are and how comfortable they can be in a system... my point being lol that rooney is a striker and not an attacking midfieled with all the skills and magic and the serive comes frm behind in the mf and the service behind that is the defenders... just look at what lucio does playing on thr right wing.. there are 11 players for a reason and any player on that pitch can win a match even the GK.. so why build a team round one player when with a team like england eith very good players all over fit into a system that suits them.. and dont blame capello as the players have had two years to voice there opinions to capello on where they feel comfortable to play and how they feel.. and they decide to wait till now bit of a bad descison all over i feel... soz for the rant ive had enough of how good rooney and gerrard are and defo andy townsend

Is it just me or was Glen Johnson utterly abysmal against Algeria? He was flat-footed when defending and got beaten very easily a few times. Going forward he offered nothing for England and was careless in posession. I've got to admit I won't be rooting for England against Slovenia. As a small country that's struggled for the survival of its language and culture, I feel Slovenia has more in common with Wales than England. So come on Slovenia, pull off a shock!

Barry Jones (Everton fan) says...

Merse, as usual so far, with your world cup assessments, you are spot on. Drop Heskey and play Gerrard just behind the abysmal Rooney. Play Cole wide left , with the fortunate Lennon to keep his place wide right. They desperately need to get some confidence from somewhere. They can't trap a bag of cement or hit a 5 yard pass to a player wearing the same colour shirt.

James C (Manchester United fan) says...

Why will it take a captains armband for Terry to take responsibility, those calling for him to be reinstated are way off the mark. Terry lost his captaincy for a good reason and I still agree with the decision, each and every England player needs to take responsibility not just the man with the armband and be held accountable for the performances. This would be made easier if the players felt comfortable ie play them in their positions, personally I think the same as a lot of people on here that 451 is the way to go but I think if capello insists on 442 he has to play people where they are comfortable, it's the only way to get the best out of the team. Gerrard should not be out wide he should be central or not at all, Barry should not be holding in a 442 he should be supporting lampard who is invisible this world cup so far because he is being out numbered in the centre. Most teams this world cup have packed the midfield, even watching Argentina play with 5 forwards they still had numbers in the midfield as tevez and messi dropped the half way at times to get the ball. It's not rocket science!

Frankie Fulton (Manchester City fan) says...

Completely agree Paul, I've been banging on about it for ages now and it's become so obvious Capello is a rubbish manager, biggest tournament and our best chance in years and he's blown it. It's all ok beating Andorra and rubbish teams liek that but this is the world cup and his boring, italian football is getting us NOWHERE!!! He should be sacked now and get Harry redknapp in before the slovenia game because otherwise we'll be out the world cup. Harry is a top quality manager, the players will love him and with him in charge we'll easily win it. Capello is ruining england. Get rid!!

Objective Impartial (Real Madrid fan) says...

It seems like Rooney has a birthright to be in the team irrespective of his current performance. Should he start from the bench maybe it will make him work hard. To me he is one of the worst players in the last two matches should not be in the staring line up. Yet when all the jokers are assessing player performance they are all scared to say how useless Rooney has been. England's hopes do not depend on one player but the 11 on the pitch

Ash Halsall (Southport fan) says...

Sorry....did i miss something in the first 2 group games?? Was it just Rooney out there wearing a white shirt? Could have sworn we started and finished each game with 11 players. Maybe if you all got off the players backs, Rooney in particular, then there wouldnt be as much pressure on them to perform. You dont see other countries media over analysing every little thing. The media and fans have to shoulder the most amount of blame. Most of you scream and hurl abuse at Rooney every week when he plays for United, then expect a favour from him when he pulls on an England shirt and then give him dogs abuse again when he doesnt perform...talk about hypocrites. Lampard was shit in the 2 games, so was Carragher, and Lennon, and Wright-Phillips and Heskey, and King, etc etc. For all Capellos talk of taking players who were on form and that....for some strange reason i dont see Bent in the squad(the 2nd highest ENGLISH goalscorer in the league, but Heskey gets in - the same guy who hasnt scored for nearly 5 months. Also, how did Capello think he could get the Lampard-Gerrard partnership to work where previous mangers failed? And you have the cheek to lay the whole blame on Rooney?? Did you not think that the reason he isnt doing aswell for England as he is United, is that he is playing with better players and that the players Capello picked just arent up to it?? Now i can see why most United fans despise the national team. Its times like these i am glad i follow lower league football. For gods sake just leave the players to it - stop hyping them up and give them the space they need and peace and quiet to do their jobs - if you lot were that knowlegable about the game then you would be doing the job full time, but your not so shut up. Leave them to it and the rest will follow.

Capello has lost the plot. During the qualifiers we were good so didn't really need to change anything but now its all gone a bit pete tong, he doesn't seem to know what to do. The formation is so outdated and predictable, the whole world but Capello can see it. Hump it up to heskey, pass it to Rooney or Gerrard, Shoot..."IT DOESN'T WORK FABIO....SORT IT OUT" Another thing, we really should have an English manager, there is no passion there from Capello and it has rubbed off on to the players. We look awful, the game against algeria was the worst I have ever seen England play, and the USA game was not much better.

David O'toole (Manchester United fan) says...

Not really sure what point Paul is trying to make about Ireland hammering Algeria a few weeks ago so England really should maul them. England haven't beaten Ireland in a game of football since 1985. This is exactly what is wrong with the English press and their fans. They think that they are miles ahead of a team like Ireland and use the fact that we beat Algeria as a stick to beat their own lads with. Fact is they're just not good enough and if they came up against Ireland, they'd probably beaten too.

Why is it we all make average players like G.Barry sound like they are Gods when they are injured and not in the team, he is not good enough for me!! whats up with carrick he played better than Barry all season!!. another Big worry is that when team go to big tournament they take there BEST players to start every match (well thats what i would do) If Hesky is our best stricker we are never going to win a pub quiz never mind the likes of Italy or Brazil. total dissappointing so im rooting for mexico

Nick Buggle (Carlisle United fan) says...

Firstly, drop Lampard (invisible for two matches), Heskey (no point aiming at a man who can't lay off his header), Gerard (not fit to be captain and has not the guts), Terry ( a lateral passer with no vision) and Rooney (a national disgrace for his lack of cajones and dire boorishness regarding the supporters). Secondly, put on the journeymen who at least would try their hearts out to win. Imagine Cole, Crouch and Upson been given a chance, would England have drawn against Algeria? Very unlikely. Thirdly, what the blazes is Beckham doing anywhere near the dugout? He has to be a malign influence on the players. If I was in the squad I would be furious at his role. Lastly, I think Capello should roast his prima donnas and remind them that they are stars in PL teams only because there are so many foreigners acting as playmakers. Rooney can't score against Algeria but Drogba can against Brazil! Even NZ drew with Italy; would England? Doubtful.
