everybody knows joe cole should start with rooney up front and gerrard just behind, everyone except cappelo. also why the fuss about the goalkeeper, none of the teams in our group should get anywhere our goal to get in a shot! lennon should either run at the defence or go home. the defence is as good as any i've seen in the cup so far, we need someone to remind this group of players they are as good as anyone i've seen. COME ON ENGLAND

Merson spot on...cant understand how he has our few good players out of position...one plus is that it is cup football for us now 1 game earlier than it should have been which might shake them from their slumber. I have been undecided for years about Heskey and his apparent importance but these last 2 games have confirmed he should never play again, that missed sitter in the first game and him treading on the ball in the box as he attempted to step over the ball...how much does he get paid...i see more skill when i am watching my sons under 7 games !...if ferguson was in charge he would have Rooney up front by himself as he does for united doesnt that say it all....please please start with cole on the left...

I think that the USA game was not all bad, i expected it to be close as it was the first game! We played the worst game i think i have ever watched against Algeria who i thought were the better team. England now need to go and play well against Slovenia, if we beat them well and get through to the knock outs these two previous games will soon be forgotten, and at the end of the day it could be worse, we could be french fans :-)

George Beckett (Manchester United fan) says...

Some of the comments have been so disrespectful to the Algerians. If you watch the game, they played a tactically perfect game. Bougherra and Halliche didnt let Rooney breathe. Every time Lennon had the ball on the right, Belhadj very cleverly forced Lennon onto his inside. Remember there are two teams on a pitch, and I believe that the 0-0 result was as much a poor performance by England than a good performance by Algeria. And dont forget, Algeria dominated Slovenia in the first half of their game, and were very unlucky to lose, against a Slovenian team that are now top of the group. So, comments like 'our Under 12s should be beating Algeria' are so disrespectuful it is unbelievable.

Ste Jones (Liverpool fan) says...

Surely Capello must play a 451 in the next game. Put Gerrard behind Rooney, Milner on the left and Joe Cole on the right. Get rid of Lennon and Wright - Phillips because they have proved that they are useless.

yes england hasnt done very well, however instead of critising them, get behind them, 'come on England', look on the bright side !! its only another 4 years too wait for the next one.........and we are not the only team playing poorly at the moment.....

Craig Eustace (Liverpool fan) says...

Fabio clueless capello has to play 4-3-3/4-5-1 and play rooney as a lone striker were he is top top drawer and bangs goals in for fun and stevie g and joey cole can inter change from the left and in the hole behind rooney and can switch positions. As for lampard he simply HAS TO BE DROPPED he is so poor in an england shirt its unbelievable. So take note fabio and play the right formation with your best players in their best positions!!!

Stuart Brettell (West Bromwich Albion fan) says...

capello is one of the best managers in the world, as was sven. so please no excuses now, the simple fact is that we are just not as good as some misguided fans think we are. Capello has been successful at inter and Real and the italians know how to win world cups a bit better than we do. so Paul [sacked as manager of walsall], you can give an opinion, but don't criticise Capello becuase he has the credentials to back up his decisions, tactics and modus operani. finally, for those of you that think Joe Cole is the miracle cure to our problems - football is about attcking AND defending. Cole can exist at Chelsea in a 4-3-3 but not in the 4-4-2 that capello favours. He has no pace or tackling ability and the fullback would be exposed. SWR was bought on to negate the pace of the USA down the flanks after Milner had been skinned more than once.

what can i say what hasn't been said already, i thought the whole team was frightened, scared to death, we put too much pressure and expect too much, we are not good enough as a team, the press pump it all up, bang, world class players rooney, stevie g, etc can't even pass, 1 st touch awlful, what a shame, capello too scared to take off leading players when they're not playing, i agree 1 upfront, and joe cole has to play or the press will have a field day if we mess up wed, but i think rooney was right to say that about the fans we shouldn't boo, i really hope they turn it around wed for everybody's sake, my kids got bored and went out to play after i told them this 'the world cup' is one of the things you'll enjoy and remember , like i did gazza and co etc, well they need to line em all up in front of little kids and explain why they didn't enjoy playing in the world cup( every little boys dream who can kick a ball). come lads enjoy it and just play

I think Fabio should go with 4-5-1, they should drop lampard, i would go, James, Johnson, Terry, Upson, A.Cole, Lennon, Milner, Barry, Gerrad, J Cole, Rooney

Look, why can't everyone just be honest. England are in no way a world cup winning team, I wish they where. The press & media keep keep telling Rooney he I'd the best fooballer in the world and now he honestly believes that. No wonder he is a prima donna. Football in England needs to be changed from grass root level and until we all start being honest I don't think we can improve. Most most english players are really over-rated by club and country in my opinion and Rio F is a classic example of that. The FA need to look at why these players are selected for ghe squad, I hope it's not just because their clubs insist on throwing £100+ grand a week at these so called football super stars?

Grant Barker (Manchester United fan) says...

Everyone agrees England are woeful as Merse puts it! The one thing i have read that i have a problem with is that this article says Rooneys 'purple patch of goals' was 2 months ago?! Yes,we know he has not scored since, which is down to injury ending his season basically, and you can see he is still not right yet! But the way its written on this page says it was a short goalscoring burst and he has lost his touch? No chance, firstly, because Rooney was baging them in all season long and has now had a injury put the brakes on it! And i also think that the rest of the England team are to blame for Waynes performances lately! He has gone from free scoring for United to being a shadow of himself because in my opinion, Sir Alex got it spot on when he had United play around him, playing Rooney right up top with 2 wide men providing him and 3 central midfielders being able to win the ball, keep it and build attacks! How many times did we see Antonio Valencia get wide and put cross' in which Wayne gobbled up and filled his boots with goals, playing as a propper centre forward! But England dont play that way, and the only chance we have of winning the world cup is by getting Rooney to perform, to do this you need to play around and for him, like United do,because he is that good! He has scored against AC Milan, Bayern, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Villa, and Chelsea plying as the main man on his own for United. So it proves the tactics/formation Man Utd played with really worked! You cant tell me its all down to him that he has yet to score at the world cup! So far im seeing Rooney short of fitness and most of all frustrared by whats playing around him, ive lost count of how many times he is dropping deep to get the ball. The midfield and the wingers need to shape up more than anyone for me, and i am mainly talking about lampard and lennon! And im sorry to say Lampard has been garbage for England now for 3 or 4 years!

One can argue positions and players forever England were deadbeats - no effort for 50/50 ball, no attempt to take palayers on and when somebody tried this, the rest held their positions meant for passing. No-one triangulated to receive the 50/50 ball in a tackle - schoolboy errors. Cummon, these are professional footballers, they may not have their best game when played out of position but they should be able to do something Sky and the UK should do less moaning about banker salaries and look more at their footballer millionaires

Mr Realist (Manchester United fan) says...

Come on guys isn't it obvious - We always do well in qualifying and our manager is seen as "The One", but as soon as the tournament starts we all bottle it. The players can't handle the pressure and the manager loses the plot. I have noticed for the past decade at least that when the going's good, the players are loved and the manager is loved, but when the going's bad the players completely lose all form and the manager has no idea what to do to change things. The first mistake Fabio made was his squad selection, there are a number of shocking exclusions from the squad. I also have to question the sanity of anyone wanting Emile Heskey in their side. Seriously, he's a forward? Anyway, here's my starting XI for the next game: GK - Hart CB - Dawson CB - Terry CB - Upson RWB - Lennon (Dawson can cover his flank while he concentrates his pace up the wing) LWB - Ashley Cole (The closest thing we've got to left winger, needs to be pushed up more Upson can cover his flank) DM - Barry (Can provide cover for the CBs) CM - Milner (Lampard is not good enough to be in the starting XI) AM - Gerrard (Free role) AM - Joe Cole (Free role) ST - Rooney England can get by with 3 at the back with Dawson and Upson covering the full back positions, also Ashley Cole can cover at left back if required. Barry can hold the midfield while Milner can be the midfield general running the game. Joe Cole and Gerrard can have free roles behind Rooney to run riot against the opposition, with strong support from Lennon and Ahsley Cole on the wings. This formation and selection will give us a massive attacking potential.

Cliff Brown (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Start with Defoe and crouch also he must include Joe Cole a player that can take people on,he should bring on dawson to strenthen the defence.I just wish we had a manager who could pick a team that wants to win.I would drop lampard and Roonie both look like they dont want to be there.Wake up Cappelo if you want to stay in the world cup.

John Roads (Liverpool fan) says...

i think u got it all wrong, Hesky was superb!!! Rooney was a little slack but who can blame him with the positions he was forced to pick the ball up in. I do agree Gerrard cant perform to his best on the left and he is a key player along with Rooney. With my experience we need to keep possession of the ball, you look at all the good side as the sting together allot of passes. whereas we have 3 or 4 passes and the send the ball into the strikers. we are in a rush to get forward and need to develop/create a good opportunity for the strikers before delivering them the ball.

Jason Green (Aston Villa fan) says...

Capello still does not know his 1st and best team ??? lol how long has he been in charge now. Lennon over Ashley Young ?? Why did Capello not tell Lennon to get that ball and run full steam ahead against the Algerians. Heskey is not even good enough to make the Villa team as well as his fitness levels are not up to international standards. There is nobody giving good delivery's into the front men. Taking Milner off because Capello wants to show everybody who's boss and not thinking whats best for the team. Milner is clearly a man in form and you choose not to use him ?? THANK YOU CAPELLO FOR RESTING OUR STAR MAN FOR NEXT SEASON !!!

Ken Napier (Chelsea fan) says...

Hi Paul, I did like your assessment of Englands games so far at this tournament, also your opinions and scoring of the players in the last match. Mr. Capello is a top Italian coach at all levels, but I do think he has a typical Italian approach, 'lets not loose this game' not 'lets win this game', perhaps a small difference in idea but a major difference in the players mental approach to a match. He also seems to, with his strict disciplininary code be saying my way or no way. Well lets hope that both my previous statements are wide of the mark, because now it's squeeky bum time, a loss and it's a flight home, a draw and it's the throw of a dice, win and we get a second chance. The Gerrard, Lampard debate has raged for years, but of course players of their ability can play together if they are played in their natural positions. Gerrard thrives just behind the main striker and Lampard strength is spraying balls from midfield and late runs into the box, both players requiring a defencive mid-fielder behind them. Now what formation would accommodate them in their natural positions, oh yes the one almost evryone is recommending, 4-5-1. My team would be, James in goal, Johnson, Dawson, Terry, A. Cole as the defensive line, Lennon, Lampard, Barry (Defending mid-fielder), Gerrard ( in hole behind striker), J. Cole as the mid-field and Rooney (striker, with instruction to stay in his area and keep his mouth shut). My team talk before the match in this instance would be very limited, go out onto the field and express yourselves as Englishmen, show passion, pride, commitment and enjoy the game without fear, lets go out with a roar rather than whimper if that is our fate and remember that united we stand, divided we fall. The previous games are history which we cannot alter, the game to come can be a new begining and a history with which we could be proud. Lift the rafters and drown out the blare of the vuvuzelas

Mark Patterson (Manchester United fan) says...

I'm from N. Ireland so supporting England doesn't come naturally to me. But I couldn't agree more with those who think 4-5-1 is the way to go. It seems so obvious!!! The ball is crap in the air. keep it on the ground. Play Rooney in an advanced position like at Man United and Gerrard behind him. I believe such a formation would not only terrify teams but give England a fantastic chance to win this tournament.
