Wrong tactics, wrong subs, too much fear and woeful Wayne... Paul Merson takes apart England's draw.Back to story
All the big teams are struggling, not just England. The problem is that the big teams have become so arrogant they think they just need to turn up and they will win. Not so! The lesser teams treat every game like a cup final, and really have a go, so now the big teams suddenly realise they have a fight on their hands. Also our media are so negative it's abismal. Merse is right about the changes, I just hope Capello can see it.

the problem with wayne rooney is that in the premier league in england the referees and other officials are frightened from him and allow him to swear all the time on the park so he's come to believe he's invincible .if his feet were were as good as his mouth he may have been a very good player but on friday night he was brought back down to where he should have been and they ran rings round about him and the refs there will not put up with his foul mouth thank goodness someone can put him in his place as he is a very unsavoury young man. yours in sport, mrs jessie allan

i agree merse with your commonts but i dont agree with the marks you gave them, i reckon you have over marked them!! capello has to start earning his ridiculous 6m a year wage and stand up and be counted. 4-5-1 is the only way forward now and anybody with half an ounce of footie knowledge knows that, the fa could just pay me 100 quid to work that ne out........ The sorry state now is that as much as i want us to do well im now facing the nightmare reality that we will be on the plane home thursday cos the damage done in the 2 games is unrepairable...

Unfortunately alot of people seem to be missing a major point.Gerrard was assigned te left midfield position but showed a complete lack of discipline (as usual when he is asked to play on the left!) and seemed to be in the middle of the pitch for most of the game. The result?Lampard is having to playa much more defensive role than he is used to (or good at) and getting criticised for this and also the other major effect is that Ashley, widely recognised as one of the best attacking left backs in the world, can`t get forward at all as the entire left flank would be exposed if the ball was lost -all because Gerrard has gone walkabout.Very little criticism for him though!

Look you can't blame Capello for England's bad start. He's playing the same team now in the same positions as he did in qualitfying, and in qualifying it worked great so narutally he's going to keep using it. Maybe he should have changed things, but against USA we'd have won if it wasn't for Green, so he obviously thought that on that info his team should beat Algeria. Look Rooney was rubbish and Gerrard isn't good on the wing. Lampard was rubbish too, so drop him and Rooney and play Crouch and Defoe upfront with Gerrard along side Barry in Midfield. This way Barry can sit and let Gerrard work his magic and feed balls through to Crouch and Defoe. Our back four doesn't need changing, onviously for the next game it does because of Carragher's card, bit after that he plays again. The only thing I can't work out is why he took Ledley King. He gets all this special treatment but he doesn't deserve it. If anyone else sat training out they wouldn't get played so why King. If he doesn't train incase he gets injured he might as well not play Football. Should have took Dawson instead of King in the first place then took Gary Cahill when Ferdinand was ruled out.

the true that all english football fans do not want to admit is that the premier league has destroyed the englang national team. England do not have any world class playerers on show because all the top clubs in englang employ foreigners in all the important department. For example, no english keeper plays for any of the top 5 clubs. The people who are benefitting from the premier league are the africans, eastern europe, south american and asian countries. As long as the top english clubs continue with their policy of importing players from abroad and ignoring he english players, the englang team will not win anything. The present players fail to reproduce their club performance for the england team because with their clubs, they had the foreign players to support them but here at the world cup all their shortcomings are laid bare for all to watch.. The premier league has to change its policy of allowing the top clubs to play as many foreigners as they like. Where are englang going to find replacements for gerrard, lampard, ferdinand and others when thet finally retire? at present , frankly i dont see anyone at all.

This is not a new problem for the England team, or even the English teams playing in Europe. How can we expect our footballers to adopt the style of play of Italy or Spain when this is not how they play week in week out? The Premiership may not be the most technically gifted league in the world or even the most tactical, but what it is renowned for is pace! All of our teams play the game at 100mph and when we do that the foreign teams cannot cope with it. Liverpool were a prime example of this this past season in Europe, away from home they were terrible, slow and methodical and trying not to lose. At anfield when they had to go for the win and the shackles came off at times they were awesome! Utd several seasons ago were well beaten at half time by Barcelona I believe came out in the second half and played the premiership way and Barca couldnt live with them! Being the England manager should be the easiest job in the world but they try to overcomplicate it by changing their natural style of play. The defence pretty much picks itself but from an attacking point of view why not pick Rooney, Gerrard, Cole and Crouch and just give them licence to go destroy the opposition? No fear. No overcomplicated tactics. Make them believe that they are among the best players in the world because of the job they do week in week out. Go do that job!!

The writing was on the wall when Walcott was left behind amid rumours that he didnt gel with Rooney and that Rooney preferred playing with Lennon. Reminds you of Utd where he likes to play on his own up front and insists on playing when not fully fit.

I just hope Cappello makes the changes from the start i.e. Joe Cole instead of Heskey out on the left and Gerrard behind Rooney. If he waits till the 70th minute it could be too little too late!

Whilst I agree with some of your coments especially the need to play Joe Cole(he is the most creative player in the squad) and the Algerian game was crying out for his involvment. To me the answer is simple: There is no leadership on the field, the team seem to be aimless in thier approach. Give back the captains armband to John Terry and you will see the England team perform the way they did in the qualifying rounds.

Good points Mers, from the off, the only way to play the team has been 4,5,1. It is the way most of the England players play for their respective clubs anyway. This is so much a "no brainer" I cannot believe Capello hasn't gone this way. Rooney up front Gerrard to support, lampard and Barry in the middle Cole (Joe) left and Lennon on the right, the rest then virtually picks itself, goalie-wise for me also a no brainer, got to be James, he has real presence due to the fact he is so darn big, leaves opposing forwards with hardly any space to shoot for. Centre back Terry and Dawson, and leave the full-backs as they are. One thing I did notice the other night, the players seemed scared to lose, as a manager you can't let that get in the players heads, that causes more trouble than anything else. Eriksson doesn't seem such a bad coach after all.

WR should start Wed's game on the bench and come in 70 mins into the game if it still a draw. ( alittle earlier if England are down) He did this with Everton and MU and he made such a huge impact. I think he is still not a 90 min man.

Players play beter in their natural positions. Also players who were in form for their clubs at the end of the season should be in the team. My team for the group stage would have been: Hart Johnson Dawson Terry A.Cole Lennon Gerrard Barry J.Cole Crouch Defoe. No Rooney or Lampard, totally out of form. A bit of club understanding up front. I know Im biased but as it will never happen I thought I would give my opinion!

Totally agree with Paul's analysis. Joe Cole should've been on for Lennon - both lennon and SWP are out of their depth at this level. I'm glad Carragher won't be playing in the next game. Although he's got experience, he lacks pace and has been out of the international scene to long to be coming back now - he's got booked for 2 clumsy challenges where he's been done for pace. If Capello is going to play this formation, he needs the two wing backs to push forward - like they did against USA - they just didn't get forward against Algeria. Lampard is poor and Gerrard, as captain, looks like he'saffected by the team's performance. Heskey looks very uncomfortable on the ball and Rooney is our worst player - Capello should've taken both Heskey and Rooney off and put Defoe and Crouch on earlier - if nothing else, it would've shown Rooney that he doesn't have devine right to a place in the side - after his rant after the match, he doesn't deserve to where the shirt - he should offer refunds (+ flights) to all those fans who attended the game.

I said before this game play 4-5-1 drop heskey, give rooney and gerrard the chance to devastate teams. The saddest thing is we leave it till a "must win" game to do this and we could have those 30chances and not score and be out. Im hoping that Capello isnt dumb and just wanted to look poor before choosing the 4-5-1 and seeing england demolish teams. Anyone just has to look at the prem the other season when Gerrard and Torres played like this at Liverpool, when both started together they were amazingly good. If Capello doesnt pick this 4-5-1 then he has banked on the "barmy" decision by the FA to extend his contract prior to the WC with obviously a huge payout if he gets the sack!! if he does and I hope we see the "real" England then maybe this is just Mr Capello being very clever not to show his aces until it really matters....by the way I truly believe that if we play 4-5-1 and rooney has to play up top then we will see the real Wayne....lets hope we are not all devastated thursday morning.....

I do not know much about the technical side of football, but I do know what looks good and what doesnt. To me, the whole of our team on Friday looked as if they had their spirit beaten out of them! They looked almost scared, and nervous, and I dont understand what has happened between qualifying and now. Capello has made some odd decisions - taking an obviously unfit Ledley King, leaving out Walcott, ignoring Joe Cole, insisting on players playing out of their natural positions, and keeping the players in the dark about who is starting - all of this has had an impact. I just hope that they call sort all of this out before next Wednesday, cos I still believe that we can go much further in these finals . We just need to get our fighting bulldog spirit back! COME ON ENGLAND YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Hi Paul, Great comments you made on the England performance on Friday against Algeria, however i do believe that your low score for Rooney is rather disappointing, i fully agree that he is not playing at his best, but not many of the team are. If you had someone like Beckham out on the flank we would have someone who could give Rooney the kind of service any striker needs to score a goal. In regards to Carragher not playing on Wednesday, i for one are glad, why or why is Capello not playing Dawson who has had an excellent season with Tottenham, and i also agree to your comment on why Capello is not playing J. Cole, he would bring so much to the team and hopefully a few goals. Keep up the good work

I beleive if Rooney plays well England play well if he doe's not then nor do England, I can understand Capello playing Heskey a second time as he played well against U S A and he was right in selecting the same team, I would have picked James as 1st choice merely for his presence although Green had nothing wrong in the qualifiers. I think Capello will make changes but lets remember he is a good manager not a magician, it is up to all the players to stand up and be counted. my team a against Slovenia if fit would be James, Johnson, Cole, Dawson, Terry, Lampard,Barry, Milner, Cole, Gerrard, Rooney. Cole would be alongside Rooney with Milner on the left and Gerrard cominging in from left midfield to support the forwards I think Cole could provide the spark for Rooney.

Play Gerrard and Rooney in the positions that they so often play amazingly for their clubs, and build the team around them. And play Joe Cole
