Danny Garcia sets up possible rematch with Amir Khan after WBC win

New WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia said he wants to 'fight the best' after setting up a potential rematch with Amir Khan.

Garcia scored a unanimous points victory over Robert Guerrero in Los Angeles on Saturday night to secure the WBC crown vacated by the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr, with Khan the mandatory challenger for the title.

The 27-year-old stopped the Bolton fighter in the fourth round in 2012 but his father and trainer, Angel Garcia, recently insisted his son has no desire to face Khan again.

However, after the win over Guerrero, Garcia, who also holds the WBC light-welterweight belt, said: "I want to fight the best. Danny Garcia never ducked anybody. I'm back where I belong. I am now a two-division world champion.

"It was a great fight. I felt I won the fight clearly and the judges said the same thing. It was what I expected. I knew I would win at least eight or nine rounds.

"Guerrero is tough. No one has ever stopped him. He came to fight, he was in shape. I'm taking nothing away from him.

"I was throwing my combinations, using my legs like my dad told me to do. I knew he was going to come to fight. He's a rugged warrior."

While Garcia faces a mandatory defence against Khan other fights are possible as well, with Guerrero immediately calling for a rematch.

"Not one person out there thought Danny won, but his team," Guerrero said. "I pressured him. I nailed him, busted his body up. I out-jabbed him.

"The crowd thought I won the fight. I thought I won the fight, and I definitely want a rematch."

Meanwhile Mayweather, who retired last September after a 49-0 career, rejected any notion of a return to the sport as he watched from ringside.

"As of right now, I don't have the urge to fight," Mayweather said, avoiding a choice on who he sees as his successor, adding: "There's a lot of great talent out there."
