Dog stops play on day one of second England v India Test

By Oli Burley

Walkies! India and England trooped off for an early tea as a stray dog stopped play on day one of the second Test.

The nifty canine caused comical scenes just before the break after straying onto the outfield, bringing play to a shuddering halt with Cheteshwar Pujara (97no) and Virat Kohli (91no) closing in on their hundreds.

After an afternoon session in which England went wicketless, skipper Alastair Cook and bowler Stuart Broad were among those to see the funny side as the dog ran rings around stewards attempting to clear it from the field.

Broad even attempted to fool the hound with a pretend game of 'fetch' but the pooch refused to fall for his dummy throw, instead returning to the outfield for a lap of honour just when the stewards thought the dog had disappeared behind the sightscreen.

Test Cricket: The Verdict

With England striving in vain for a breakthrough, Sky Sports commentator Nasser Hussain suggested Cook was trying to enlist the mutt as an extra fielder.

Fellow pundit Sir Ian Botham was rather more sympathetic to the dog's plight.

"The poor thing will be petrified. Somehow it's come by mistake into the stadium and suddenly it's thinking 'how do I get out of here?'" he said.
