Ashes must-see moments: Pietersen and Ponting make our list

Some of the funnier flashbacks from the Ashes...

Harmison's shocking first ball

It’s a shame this is the Ashes memory that will likely stick with Steven Harmison. Not his ferocious first spell which took a chunk out of Ricky Ponting’s cheek on the first morning of the 2005 Ashes, nor his crucial slower-ball dismissal of Michael Clarke later that series.

No, it will be this anti-climactic opening to the follow-up 18 months later. Harmison shrugged off the mishap at the time but it was symptomatic of a player and a team that had lost their way. The Australians seized on it to win the series 5-0.

KP mugged off by fan

Kevin Pietersen appears to have upset almost everyone over the last two years, with the only exception seemingly Piers Morgan. It was his supposed misdemeanours on this tour that got the ball rolling and led to his tell-all autobiography and the break-down of trust between him and the England set-up.

Perhaps looking to get some practice in for his future book-signings at stores up and down the country, Pietersen obliged a fan in the crowd for an autograph, only to find the request was a hollow one.

Sprinkler celebration

The sprinkler celebration took hold in the build-up to the 2010/11 Ashes series, epitomising England’s positive and relaxed approach to the series. Not haunted by the failings from the 24 years since their last successful tour, a young side led by Andrew Strauss on the field, and by Graeme Swann’s good-natured humour off of it, cantered to a 3-1 series win, even celebrating retaining the Ashes in style on the MCG outfield.

Ponting rage after run out

Our new Sky Sports pundit for the 2015 Investec Ashes may chose his words a little more selectively with a microphone in his hand than he did in this famous Ashes moment from 10 years ago. With the series tied at 1-1, Australia were well and truly under pressure in an Ashes series for the first time in two decades, and it was Ponting who was at the helm.

He let that pressure spill over at Trent Bridge after being run-out by Gary Pratt, an England substitute fielder, as they fell to defeat at Trent Bridge.

Anderson shuts up Johnson

This is a duel that is set to continue over the summer. Each has had the upper hand at one point or another, with Johnson currently holding the crown for his exploits in the 5-0 whitewash in 2013/14.

However, three years earlier it was Jimmy who was doing the damage, taking 24 Aussie scalps at an average of 26.04. But during one of his rare wicketless spells, Johnson had a few poorly-timed words for him…
