Bolton Wanderers have been served a winding up order by HM Revenue and Customs, the third petition of its kind in recent months.
The club have confirmed they are aware of the petition and the issue is being dealt with.
Two similar orders were issued in May but cleared before the case got to court.
Bolton, promoted to the Sky Bet Championship last season, are still under a transfer embargo from the EFL, banning them from paying any transfer fees for new players.
The club has also lost its finance director Shaun McHugh, after just four months in the job. He's the third head of finance to leave the club in the past year.
The Wanderers returned to the second tier just one season after they were relegated to League One for the first time in 23 years.
