Injured Spurs defender to make gradual return after Milan challenge

Tottenham have confirmed Croatia international defender Vedran Corluka will return to light training next week after damaging his ankle against AC Milan. The right-back was on the end of a two-footed challenge from Mathieu Flamini in Tuesday's fantastic 1-0 UEFA Champions League success at the San Siro. However, the evening was tarnished somewhat by the injury to Corluka, who returned to England on crutches and was forced to wear a protective boot. The former Manchester City man visited a specialist on Thursday and it has been recommended that he resume light training next week with the view to making a full return within a month. Tottenham are inactive this weekend, but face Blackpool at Bloomfield Road next Tuesday and manager Harry Redknapp is likely to recall Scotland international Alan Hutton to fill the void vacated by Corluka.

Immobilised

"Vedran Corluka will remain immobilised in a protective boot for the next four days after a scan determined that he had sprained part of his ankle joint capsule following a challenge from Mathieu Flamini during Tuesday's Champions League Round of 16 first leg victory over AC Milan," read a statement on the club's official website. "Following a clinical examination by a foot and ankle specialist this afternoon, it has been recommended that Vedran make a gradual return to training starting next week. "Should the Croatia international feel no ill effects of the injury during his gradual return to training then he should be back in full training in a few weeks."
