The defender, who has twice been named Stoke's U18 Player of the Year, only signed his first professional contract a couple of months ago after he completed his scholarship.

But after being selected for first-team duty in pre-season by Potters' boss Mark Hughes, Edwards' progress has been rewarded.

"It's always pleasing to see a local lad doing well," chief executive Tony Scholes told the club's official website.

"Tom's progressed into the first-team squad and Mark has included him in a number of pre-season matches. He's earned this new contract."
