Stoke boss Mark Hughes believes his side were too respectful of Southampton in the Potters' 1-0 defeat st St Mary's.
Despite succumbing to just a 1-0 loss, Stoke had very little of the match as Southampton passed the ball around with ease.
One shot on target all match tells its own story as Hughes' men offered virtually nothing in the final third, and never really got going, much to the Welshman's frustration.
"We got sucked into the euphoria of last week," Hughes told Sky Sports.
"We stood off them a little bit in the first half and let them control the game.
"Their chances came from set pieces.
"We were better second half and managed to stretch the game, but we didn't really create enough gilt-edged chances.
"I was more pleased with the second-half display, but in the first we showed far too much respect."
Stoke welcome Southampton to the Britannia in midweek for a Capital One Cup clash, and Hughes admitted he is relishing the chance to get revenge.
"Certainly there won't be as much apprehension," Hughes added.
"We know we can go up against them, and Wednesday night is an opportunity to show them what we are really about."
