Stalemate on the Wirral

A disappointing League One clash at Prenton Park between Tranmere and Colchester ended goalless on Saturday.

Tranmere were the better side but Colchester dug deep to earn their point. Rovers dominated for much of the first half and should have gone ahead after 27 minutes. Ash Taylor was left with an open goal from a John Welsh cross but his downward header from three yards out hit the ground and went over the crossbar. It took 29 minutes for Colchester to get a shot at goal with Owain Fon Williams saving comfortably from a 25-yard effort by Andy Bond. Shortly before the break Ashley Vincent blasted well over for the visitors following a long throw in. Play swung back and forth in the second half but with no end product. Adam McGurk headed over for the Merseysiders and Welsh cleared the bar but generally chances were few. Michail Antonio brought a good save from Owain Williams with 10 minutes remaining. At the other end, a McGurk shot was deflected inches off target and another effort blocked by keeper Ben Williams.
