Shrimpers sink Crawley

Image: Dickinson: Scored and was sent-off

Liam Dickinson scored and was sent off but 10-man Southend dumped Crawley Town out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy 1-0.

The striker put Blues ahead from the penalty spot after 25 minutes but was then dismissed midway through the second half. Dickinson had already had an effort ruled out for offside before he was tripped in the box by John Dempster. The summer signing from Plymouth slotted his slotted his spot-kick low into the right-hand corner, with Red Devils goalkeeper Michael Kuipers diving the wrong way. But Dickinson was given his marching orders in the 66th minute for a lunge on Kyle McFadzean. Crawley raised their game after the break with Matt Tubbs having an effort chalked off for offside, Hope Akpan scooping the ball over the bar and Glenn Morris saving from Charlie Wassmer at the death.
