Experienced defender back at Gresty Road for second spell

Ashley Westwood has re-joined Crewe Alexandra, penning a short-term deal with the League Two club. The 34-year-old was released by Kettering just before the close of the January transfer window and has been training with Crewe ever since. As a free agent he is permitted to sign a permanent deal with a new club and will now see out the 2010/11 campaign at Gresty Road. Westwood previously spent three seasons with the Alex in the 1990s and was a key member of the side which secured promotion to the old First Division in 1997. He made almost 100 league appearances for the club before moving on to Bradford in 1998.

Registration

Having fallen out of favour at the Bantams he joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2000, before turning out for Northampton, Chester, Stevenage, Port Vale and Swindon. He moved on to Wrexham in 2008, but left for Kettering due to family reasons. Westwood parted company with the club in the New Year after agreeing to have his contract terminated by mutual consent. His registration at Crewe has been completed in time for him to make his bow in Saturday's home date with Burton Albion. He will join his namesake, Alex skipper Ashley Westwood, in Dario Gradi's plans.
