Goals from Jay Simpson and Marvin Bartley earned Leyton Orient a 2-0 victory over Northampton in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

It was a maiden win under manager Mauro Milanese and it also gave the League One side their first home triumph of the season. Orient had looked in control throughout the first half, going close to opening their account on a number of occasions. But in the 28th minute they broke the deadlock. Strike partner Chris Dagnall picked Simpson out with a delightful through ball and he drew Cobblers goalkeeper Matt Duke off his line before drilling the ball into the net. However, Simpson was forced off the field seven minutes into the second period with an injury and that allowed the visitors back into the game. They squandered a number of good chances with Kaid Mohamed, Chris Hackett and Marc Richards all failing to find the target when well placed before the O's tied the game up on the stroke of full-time. The tireless Dagnall, who saw a shot strike a post with 12 minutes remaining, worked the ball into the path of Bartley and the midfielder placed his shot into the corner of the net from 15 yards.
