Grimsby 0-2 Cambridge: U's strengthen bid for League Two survival

Highlights from the Sky Bet League Two match between Grimsby and Cambridge.

Cambridge boosted their Sky Bet League Two survival bid with a 2-0 victory at mid-table Grimsby.

George Taft opened the scoring at Blundell Park, heading into the far corner from a set piece just before half-time and victory was then sealed eight minutes from time as substitute Rushian Hepburn-Murphy produced a cool finish.

Chances were few and far between during the opening stages, although it was Grimsby who looked the most likely. Kristian Dennis had their first attempt, while a Sebastian Ring cross almost deceived Dimitar Mitov in testing conditions.

At the other end, David Amoo stole through and it needed a fine save from James McKeown to keep the match goalless, however, McKeown could not do much about their next move as Taft rose highest from a free-kick to head Cambridge in front.

After the restart, they nearly doubled their lead when George Maris was denied by another McKeown save.

Loan midfielder Elliot Embleton then went close for Grimsby with a curling free-kick, but the visitors ultimately sealed three points in the 82nd minute when Hepburn-Murphy finished a quick counter.
