Phil Thompson hailed Sunderland's Stephane Sessegnon, but felt Swansea were toothless.
Thommo says Swans were disappointing
Sunderland 2-0 Swansea Soccer Saturday analysis
After last Sunday's famous win over Arsenal it was back to earth with a bump for Swansea.
Brendan Rodgers' men were beaten 2-0 at Sunderland and Soccer Saturday analyst Phil Thompson felt they were disappointing throughout the match.
He said wingers Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer, who'd had such a big influence against Arsenal, did not create enough chances for striker Danny Graham and it proved to be a comfortable afternoon for Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
The home side created little themselves, but scored two fine goals through Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner - and Thompson felt Swansea's response was toothless.
"Nobody really tested either goalkeeper," he explained on Soccer Saturday.
"That was the disappointing thing with Swansea. Ten or 15 minutes before half-time it was all Swansea.
"In the second half they came out and it was all good football, but I don't think Danny Graham had one attempt on goal. They never really got anything in the box.
"Dyer got down the right-hand side a couple of times, but nothing really came of it and Sinclair was disappointing."
Fantastic
In contrast, Thompson had praise for a couple of members of the Sunderland side, pointing out that Lee Cattermole produced a composed and balanced display in central midfield.
And he was also impressed by Sessegnon, who opened the scoring with a fine effort in the first half.
"He was fantastic, he was the best outfield player," Thompson said of Sessegnon,
"He has this ability to go forward all the time. When you've got a player who's got a good turning ability and goes forward there's always pressure. He was fantastic.
"Do you know who was great as well? Cattermole. He was absolutely brilliant.
"We know this lad can get involved in everything in the middle, but there wasn't a yellow card and it didn't even look like one.
"He was fantastic throughout."
The major talking point from the game was whether or not Sebastian Larsson should have been sent off for a two-footed challenge on Sinclair.
Thompson felt the Sunderland man should have been given his marching orders after comparing the tackle to one made by Liverpool's Glen Johnson in their Carling Cup win over Manchester City.
"We've spoken about the Glen Johnson tackle," he added.
"This was out on the touchline with Seb Larsson and it was not a good challenge whatsoever.
"I don't know whether either manager will make anything of it. To me it should have been a red card."
