Jordy Hiwula scored another Johnstone's Paint Trophy brace as Wigan thrashed Blackpool 4-0 at the DW Stadium on Tuesday to advance to the Northern Area semi-finals.

The Huddersfield loanee added to his brace in the previous round against Crewe, while Sean Murray and Yanic Wildschut were also on target in the second half as Latics delivered the perfect response to their 4-0 FA Cup defeat at Bury.

Hiwula had already brought a decent near-post save out of Kyle Letheren and Leon Barnett had seen a volley hacked off the line by Kwame Thomas when the opening goal was struck 20 minutes in.

Hiwula was left unmarked as Don Cowie flicked the ball inside to him and he took a touch before firing beyond Letheren.

Craig Davies then came close twice before the interval, rolling his man on separate occasions to fire wide and then into Letheren's arm as he tried to lift an attempt over the goalkeeper.

The two Latics forwards combined again for a Hiwula goal that was ruled out when the scorer was deemed offside, and although Jussi Jaaskelainen made a sharp near-post stop from Jarrett Rivers' flick, the hosts' advantage was doubled with 27 minutes remaining when Murray's swerving effort crashed into the top corner.

Substitute Wildschut weaved through a static defence before hammering home a third six minutes after coming on and Hiwula grabbed his second from the penalty spot with 12 minutes to go.

He would have scored from open play had Luke Higham not handled his shot after the defender and Letheren got mixed up - which resulted in the goalkeeper being forced off with an injury - but Hiwula was not to be denied from the resulting spot-kick, sending substitute Myles Boney the wrong way.
