Germany international pens Berlin contract

Hertha Berlin have extended the contract of Germany international Malik Fathi until 2009. The 24-year-old joined the Olympiastadion side in 2001 and has sealed a deal which has banished any rumours of an imminent transfer to Spartak Moscow. "Malik has become one of our top players again this season and we have seen that he is prepared to work on himself and his game," general manager Dieter Hoeness told the German press.

Determined

Fathi's agent Eckary Wassong confirmed that the versatile defender had received interest from the Russian side, but added that he was determined to stay with the Bundesliga club. "There was an enquiry from Moscow, but Hertha have made use of their option and Malik is someone who fulfils contracts," said Wassong.
