Ron Jans' Groningen had been mounting an unlikely push for Europe until a run of three successive defeats and they desperately needed to get back on track.
However, there was nothing to choose between the sides in the first half and the stalemate continued into the second period.
Holla eventually made the breakthrough in the 72nd minute and Matavz doubled Groningen's advantage five minutes from time.
The result leaves Roda in a precarious position, just three points off the foot of the table.
