The Os made sure of a point at Brisbane Road in stoppage time when striker Simon Church converted to cancel out Robert Snodgrass' earlier brace.
Leeds had the better of chances in the first half, with Neil Kilkenny forcing Orient keeper Jamie Jones into an early save with a driving shot on 13 minutes.
Soon after, Fabian Delph managed to steer the ball away from defender Charlie Daniels before feeding through to Snodgrass to finish off on the far post.
The Scottish striker netted his second from the penalty spot after Demetriou deliberately handled a shot from Luciano Becchio and was subsequently sent off.
Leeds looked to have three points in the bag before Orient midfielder Sean Thornton converted a rocket free-kick from just outside the penalty area.
Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren then failed to hold a late attempt by Dean Morgan as the ball fell kindly to Church.
