Simply the Becc!

Fabian Delph may have gone, but according to FanZoner Dave Guile, Leeds still have the best striker in the league.

Forget Delph and Beckford, Luciano is Leeds' main man

FanZone correspondent Dave Guile bids farewell to Fabian but lauds Luciano as Leeds make it two wins from two in League One...

Welcome to the Premier League then, Fabian Delph. We always knew you'd get there, even if it wasn't with us, and hopefully we'll be there to meet you before long. I'm just glad that he's ended up at a club that nurtures young English talent rather than being collected and stockpiled by Manchester City. Whose bright idea was it to suddenly hand a bundle of blank cheques to a trophy-starved club with a crippling inferiority complex? It's a bit like handing Dr Frankenstein a scalpel, a spade, some electrodes and a map to the nearest graveyard and then telling him not to do anything irresponsible.

Monstrosity

Anyway, while those at Eastlands continue building their top-heavy monstrosity and try to work out how to play six strikers at once, we return to the more familiar surroundings of League One, where a third straight win has left things looking strangely rosy. One one hand, we've taken out two potentially dangerous teams - remember how well MK Dons and Peterborough held onto their winning mentality after promotion? On the other, we're just getting started, and if my years of following Leeds have taught me one thing it's that hope is a dangerous thing. In fact, the only thing more dangerous than hope is alcohol; as my mate Chris and I found out last year after staying up until 2am in a bar in Sydney just to watch the Histon game. Two hours later I was forced to escort the poor lad home, drunk, traumatised and singing a song about Jeremy Beadle. Yes, hope does strange things to you. However, it seems sometimes that blind faith can be the way to go. How else do you explain that, where proven goalscorers like Trundle and Dickenson have failed, we have had virtual unknowns come to our club and thrive? I'm talking about the likes of Beckford, Grella, and, perhaps most importantly, Becchio. He still looks suspiciously like a bleached Mark Hateley, but Luciano Becchio is the best striker this league has to offer.
Capable
The scary thing is that we may not yet have seen the best of him yet. Nineteen goals in his first full season with us is just one short of the 20 recorded by Jermaine Beckford at the same stage of his Leeds United career, and his record before joining us (28 goals in 50 games for Merida) suggests that he's capable of being much more than just Jermaine's support man. More importantly, he's not one to let hostile surroundings put him off his game. He scores in away games and play-off games, when others freeze, and that's to say nothing of his hold-up play. He was the difference for us once again against Wycombe with a goal that suggests his destiny lies at a much higher level than this. Of course, not all unknowns turn out to be world beaters, and there's always the chance that your club will land the next Derek Lilley, or Joel Griffiths. But when you consider that, for the price it would cost to buy Cristano Ronaldo's toenail clippings you could potentially be getting a 30-goal striker, it's a lottery that's worth playing. New recruits should remember the words of the late, great Jeremy Beadle - "Next time, the star of the show could be you" - and dare to dream of greatness.
