Coventry run riot, while the Steelers, Bison and Giants also won

Coventry Blaze cemented their place as the Elite League's top team with an 8-1 thrashing of the Cardiff Devils. The Blaze completed a weekend double over the plummeting Devils, who slumped to their seventh straight league defeat on Sunday night. George Awada scored a hat-trick as the Belfast Giants kept up their fine form with a 6-2 win over the Nottingham Panthers meanwhile. Elsewhere the Sheffield Steelers defeated the Edinburgh Capitals 2-1 to solidify their position in third in the table. And the Hull Stingrays slumped to their 24th defeat of the season at home to Basingstoke Bison in a preview of their Knockout Cup semi-final fixtures. Brad Cruickshank scored the overtime winner as the Bison edged a 7-6 thriller in Hull.

Coventry Blaze 8-1 Cardiff Devils

Cardiff captain Brad Voth had put the visitors ahead with his 19th strike of the season at the end of the first period, but Coventry were clinical in their response. Dan Carlson got the scoring underway for the Blaze and they went on to score seven unanswered points in the second period. Neal Martin (two), Jonathan Weaver, Russell Cowley and Adam Calder (two) all scored before Curtis Huppe completed the scoring in the final period and rounded off a miserable night for Cardiff goaltender Joe Myers. Coventry are now five points clear of the second-placed Belfast Giants in the standings with three games in hand.

Nottingham Panthers 2-6 Belfast Giants

The Giants extended their winning streak to a league best 13 games in Nottingham on Sunday. George Awada put the second-placed visitors ahead with only 30 seconds on the clock and Shaun Sutter and Awada (second) then gave the Giants a 3-0 lead. Steve Pelletier handed the Panthers a lifeline at the end of the first period, and Johan Molin completed the scoring for the home side early into the second. But Awada completed his hat-trick courtesy of a penalty shot and Shane Johnson and Sutter (second) ensured the Giants took both points and kept up whatever pressure they can on league leaders Coventry.

Edinburgh Capitals 1-2 Sheffield Steelers

The Steelers made it a four-point weekend after coming back from conceding an early Ryan Crane goal in Edinburgh. Despite losing Joey Talbot to a penalty for misconduct Jeff Legue levelled the scores in the second period. And Ryan Finnerty's 12th goal of the season in the final period proved decisive as the Steelers edged out the Capitals for the second straight game.

Hull Stingrays 6 Basingstoke Bison 7 (SO)

Cruikshank and Greg Chambers gave Basingstoke a 2-1 lead in the second period with Jake Riddle the Stingrays' scorer, before a third period goal-fest in Hull. Rob Rankin kept the Stingrays in it following Greg Owen and Danny Stewart strikes, but the home side then hit four goals in seven minutes to blast their way into a two-goal lead with 85 seconds left on the clock. Riddle (second), Lee Mitchell, Slava Koulikov and Rankin (second) scored for the hosts, but Stewart (second) and Derek Campbell tied the game and completed a spell of nine goals in 12 minutes 30 seconds. Basingstoke held on despite being outshot in overtime, and Cruickshank then scored the winner in a penalty shootout after the first five efforts were missed.
