Day 15 - As It Happened
James Degale took middleweight gold for Britain on the penultimate day of action in Beijing.
Last Updated: 25/08/08 1:02pm
1515 : Conclusion - The women's basketball final is about the only thing still going on. The United States lead Australia early in the first quarter. We're going to call it a day on the commentary but be sure to join us again in the early hours of Sunday for the final day of action from Beijing. Thanks for your company and e-mails and enjoy the remainder of the weekend.
1501 : GOLDBoxing - Russia's Rakhim Chakhkiev beat Clemente Russo of Italy in the final of the heavyweight division.
1458 : GOLDHockey - Germany are Olympic champions in the men's hockey after Christopher Zeller's 16th-minute strike scripted a 1-0 victory over Spain in the final.
1445 : Boxing - Degale, who is about to receive his gold medal, has said he will remain amateur if Terry Edwards is kept on as head coach of the GB team. And then adds as an afterthought: "That's if they give me some decent money of course." The pro ranks beckon...
1438 : Diving - Tom Daley has finished an impressive seventh in the men's 10m platform final. The 14-year-old ended 74.40 points the winner, Matthew MItcham of Australia.
1434 : GOLDAthletics - The final athletics gold medal of the Games goes to Belgium's Tia Hellebaut in the women's high jump with a clearance of 2.05m. Pre-Games favourite Blanka Vlasic of Croatia also cleared 2.05m but had to settle for silver on countback. Russia's Anna Chicherova (2.03m) took bronze.
1425 : GOLDTable tennis - China's Ma Lin has thrilled the home crowd with gold in the men's table tennis. He beat compatriot Wang Hao in the final with bronze-medalist Wang Liqin completing an all-Chinese podium.
1420 : Basketball - Russia beat China 94-81 to earn bronze in the women's basketball. The United States and Australia meet in the gold-medal match at 3pm.
1415 : Diving - Plymouth plunger Tom Daley is eighth after four dives in the men's 10m platform final. He is 50.75 points behind leader Zhou Liuxin of China.
1411 : GOLDAthletics - It's so easy for the Americans - Jeremy Wariner anchors them to gold in an Olympic record time of 2 minutes 55.39 seconds, the third fastest in history. The British quartet - Andrew Steele, Robert Tobin, Michael Bingham and Martyn Rooney - put in a creditable display to finish fourth. Bahamas took silver and Russia the bronze.
1404 : Athletics - Straight back over to the Bird's Nest where Britain's men are about to go in the 4x400m relay...
1400 : GOLDBoxing - Degale takes middleweight gold! He regrouped in the final round and kept his distance, picking his punches on the way to a 16-14 victory. It was not very pretty, particularly in the third, but he got it done to earn Britain's 19th gold medal of the Games.
1356 : Boxing - Correa is awarded a point for Degale's holding as the bout turns very messy. Degale is being dragged into it at close quarters and his lead has been cut to 12-10 at the end of the third. This could still go either way.
1353 : Boxing - Tempers are fraying after the 'biting' incident in the first round. Correa is trying to turn it into a street brawl, a very un-Cuban-like approach. Degale is picking him off on the counter and leads 10-4 at the half-way point.
1350 : Boxing - Degale has enjoyed a superb opening round, dominating his Cuban opponent Correa to lead 6-1. He gets the bonus of an extra two points after the referee judged that Correa bit Degale on the shoulder.
1345 : Athletics - Putting Ohuruogu on the opening leg didn't work out at all - Britain were near the front at the first changeover but by the time Sanders got the baton they had slipped way out of medal contention. Sanders, who ran a good final leg, just had too much ground to make up. Now it's off to the boxing where Degale is entering the ring.
1342 : GOLDAthletics - Sanya Richards makes up for her disappointment in the individual 400m with a storming final leg to overtake Russia in the final few strides and earn gold for the United States. Jamaica took bronze with Britain way back in fifth.
1335 : Athletics - Britain have retained the same quartet that ran in the heats of the 4x400m relay, but have switched the order around. Individual 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu is going to run the first leg, Marilyn Okoro second, Kelly Sotherton third and Nicola Sanders on the anchor.
1331 : Athletics - Big quarter-of-an-hour coming up for Britain - the 4x400m women's relay final is next on the track while James Degale is up in the middleweight final shortly.
1330 : GOLDTaekwondo - World champion Maria del Rosario Espinoza beat Norway's Nina Solheim in the women's +67kg final.
1329 : Diving - Tom Daley's first dive in the 10m platform final earned a score of 81.6 and places him joint fourth at the moment.
1328 : GOLDAthletics - Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway has won gold in the men's javelin with an Olympic record throw of 90.57m in the fifth round. Latvia's Ainars Kovals earns silver with an effort of 86.64m and Tero Pitkamaki (86.16) of Finland the bronze.
1323 : GOLDAthletics - A brilliant final lap from Bekele secures the long-distance double for the Ethiopian. He broke away from the Kenyan duo down the back straight and eased home for a comprehensive victory in an Olympic record time of 12 minutes 57.82 seconds. Kipchoge was five seconds back in second with Soi finishing third.
1321 : Athletics - The Ethiopian boys have done some serious damage with their relentless pace at the front. There are just three left in the leading group with one lap to go. Bekele is kept company by Kenyan duo Edwin Soi and Eliud Kipchoge.1312 : Athletics - Kenenisa Bekele has just set off on his bid for history in the men's 5,000m. The Ethiopian is attempting to complete the long-distance double having already won the 10,000m earlier in the week. He has put his team-mates on the front to keep the pace high during the early laps.
1305 : Taekwondo - If you thought it couldn't get any more exciting over at the Taekwondo then you would be wrong - Cuba's Angel Valodia Matos has just kicked a match referee (see picture) in anger after his bronze-medal bout with Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov in the men's +80-kg tournament. He kicked the referee after coaches from both teams ran on to the mat to dispute the result. Nice to see the Olympic spirit alive and well.
1300 : Athletics - "I didn't want to go too early and blow up," confirms Dobriskey afterwards. Dame Kelly is having none of it up in the commentary box - tactical errors cost Dobriskey a medal is the 2004 champion's verdict. Michael Johnson is even more succint: "That wasn't a great race," sums up the great man.
1256 : GOLDAthletics - World champion Jamal went too early and is overtaken by Kenya's Nancy Jebet Lagat with 200m to go. Lagat stretches out for an impressive victory, with Ukrainian duo Iryna Lishchynska and Nataliya Tobias taking silver and bronze. The fast finishing Dobriskey left it too late, overhauling four or five athletes including Jamal in the home straight to finish fourth.
1254 : Athletics - Alminova takes them through the opening 1,000 metres before Bahrain's Maryam Yusuf Jamal makes a break off the front. Dobriskey still sitting in the pack.
1253 : Athletics - Commonwealth champion Dobriskey is content to sit in the pack during the opening lap as Russia's Alminova sets a less-than spectacular pace at the front.
1249 : Athletics - Dame Kelly Holmes has just said Lisa Dobriskey is capable of succeeding her as Olympic 1,500m champion. They are on the start line...
1240 : GOLDBoxing - Vasyl Lomachenko has secured featherweight gold in fine style. The Ukrainian stopped France's Khedafi Djelkhir in the first round.
1235 : GOLDAthletics - Wilfred Bungei takes a sensational victory in the men's 800m. The Kenyan did it the hard way, leading from gun to tape to defy his reputation as a big-occasion choker. Sudan's Ismail Ahmed Ismail took silver and world champion Alfred Kirwa Yego left his sprint too late and had to settle for bronze.
1230 : BRONZEHockey - Australia have secured bronze in the men's hockey with a 6-2 triumph over the Netherlands.
1223 : BRONZETaekwondo - After an amazing, controversial, emotional day on the mat, Stevenson has taken bronze for Britain with a 5-1 victory over Rabo. "I'm really happy," she confirms afterwards.
1220 : The Stevenson family, at home in South Yorkshire, have been hosting a pyjama party since 2.00am this morning to support their girl. It's looking good - she is dominating and leads 3-0 after the second round to leave Britain on the brink of breaking their Olympic Taekwondo medal duck.
1219 : GOLDBoxing - Jongjohor has sealed Thailand's second gold of the Games with a comprehensive 8-2 win over Affita Hernandez in the flyweight final.
1215 : Taekwondo - Stevenson's bronze-medal match against Noha Abd Rabo is under way. The 25-year-old from Doncaster leads 1-0 after the first round.
1212 : Boxing - The boxing finals have just started with Andris Affita Hernandez of Cuba taking on Thailand's Somjit Jongjohor in the flyweight division. The Thai leads 6-0 early in the third round and looks far too quick for his beleaguered opponent.
1200 : Medal hopes - Plenty of potential for some more British medals this afternoon. James Degale is already guaranteed at least silver in the middleweight division - he fights Cuba's Emilio Correa Bayeaux for gold at 1.46pm (BST). Over at the Bird's Nest, Lisa Dobriskey goes in the women's 1,500m final (12.50pm), while both men's and women's 4x400m relay teams could to feature in the medal shake-up.
1147 : Hockey and Baseball - Australia lead the Netherlands 4-2 early in the second half of the men's hockey bronze-medal match. Meanwhile over at the baseball, Korea are 2-1 ahead of Cuba after two innings of the gold-medal match.
1138 : All quiet - Not a great deal going on in Beijing at present so I'll take this chance to chuck the controls over to colleague Graham Mair. Enjoy the rest of the action on this the penultimate day of the Olympics.
1130 : Bolt - IAAF president Lamine Diack is the latest man to disagree with Jacques Rogge's rather pointless criticism of Usain Bolt and his celebrations. Rogge was of course horrified that old Usain did not stop and take time to congratulate the field he had just obliterated on his way to a new 200m world record... clearly a man with too much time on his hands. Diack has seen sense and says of the old fuddy-duddy's comments: "It is an unfortunate comment at this time, especially when we are driving young people to become more involved. We have to see it in the glory of their moment and give it to them." Quite so.
1115 : Diving - Just to mark your card, boy wonder Tom Daley had booked his place in the Men's 10m diving final and it gets underway at 1pm BST. Peter Waterfield was not so fortunate and missed out.
1109 : Blonde or Brunette - Our modern pentathlete heroines have just been interviewed about their exploits, Heather Fell of course took silver and team-mate Katy Livingston took a creditable seventh. Both come across as exceptionally well-bred young ladies and have sparked some healthy office debate... Livingston for mine but there are plenty who see the charms in Fell. In the interests of sexual equality I should report that male modern pentathlete Sam Weale was also in the studio... and he has lovely curly hair.
1102 : Taekwondo - Stevenson also reveals she picked up an ankle sprain in that last match so she really is up against it now. Still, let's take a break from it, I feel seriously close to being taekwondoed out...
1056 : Taekwondo - Maybe we shouldn't have been surprised given all the pandamonium beforehand but Stevenson cannot bridge the gap and ends up a 4-1 loser. Speaking afterwards she admits her mind was not ready to fight again so quickly after her re-instatement and she'll now have to try and refocus for the bronze medal clash.
1052 : Taekwondo - Stevenson falls further behind and trails 4-1 at the end of the second round and more worryingly looks to have hurt her right leg as she falls to the floor a couple of times. As you would expect she gets not a crumb of sympathy from the crowd.
1047 : Taekwondo - Unsurprisingly the crowd are right behind the Mexican and it is Espinosa who makes the better start as she leads 2-0 at the end of the first round.
1045 : Taekwondo - Well, the unrest seemed to last for all of about 90 seconds and, a few boos aside as Stevenson is introduced, it's all more or less back to normal. Gracious lot these Chinese. Here we go then, let battle commence...
1042 : Taekwondo - Here we go... the crowd have just been told their heroine will not be in the semi-finals and have not taken the news awfully well. Stevenson and her opponent Espinosa are making their way to the floor and the Brit is not getting a terribly warm welcome.
1037 : Taekwondo - Tensions seem to be rising in the taekwondo hall and the home crown still have not been officially told about the decision. Confusion reigns and there are even rumours the Chinese are now appealing the appeal. God knows what will happen next, but apparently the semi-final contest will get underway in five minutes, let's hope the situation is explained to the crowd before that time or there is every chance we'll have a pitch invasion and Stevenson will be taking on about 4000 people and not just one.
1032 : GOLDCanoeing - We interrupt all this taekwondo excitement to bring you news that Hungary have won the women's Kayak K-2 500m.
1030 : Taekwondo - Stevenson will be back on to fight again within the next 15 minutes, let's just hope she takes her chance and wins the next match and ultimately gold... would be some story. It is marvellous the way taekwondo has become the national sport in the last hour, we're all experts now.
1024 : Taekwondo - Not quite sure the Chinese crowd have grasped the fact their girl has been dumped out yet... good luck to that official when they do. But let's not worry about that, justice has undoubtedly been done and what it means is that Stevenson now has a bout against a Mexican unit that, if she wins, will guarantee her silver or gold.
1022 : Taekwondo - Unprecedented stuff... apparently. A rather hesitant Olympic official was wheeled out and, after finally putting his teeth in, explained that judges had reviewed video evidence and decided that so clear was Stevenson's winning head-shot that the result of her contest with twice Olympic champion Zhong Chen had to be reversed. What drama!
1020 : Taekwondo - Sensational scenes. Sarah Sarah Stevenson's appeal has been upheld and she has been declared as the winner of her bout! She progresses to the semi-finals and is in with a chance of gold!
1012 : GOLDCanoeing - Gold number 48 for China as they prevail in the men's C2 500m race. Russia and Germany take the minor places.
1007 : GOLDHandball - Norway have beaten Russia 34-27 to win the gold medal in the women's handball competition. Good work those Norwegians, that keeps the Russians within one gold of Team GB.
1000 : GOLDMountain Biking - As expected the peerless Julien Absalon of France coasts to victory to claim his second Olympic crown, winning by over a minute. Compatriot Peraud is second and Swiss Schurter third. Brit Liam Killeen deserves a big mention here, he suffered a nasty early fall and was as far back as 48th at one point, but fought back superbly to end up seventh - great effort. He'll be thinking about what might have been though.
0954 : Taekwondo - The fall-out from Sarah Stevenson's scandalous defeat continues. For those of you just joining us, the Doncaster lass was blatently robbed of a place in +67 semi-finals as the judges in her contest with Zhong Chen decided to ignore what would have been a winning head shot in the dying seconds. Of course it had nothing to do with the fact Stevenson's opponent was Chinese... oh no, of course not, ridiculous suggestion. Anyway, Team GB have launched an appeal against the result, although privately have admitted it is highly unlikely to make any difference.
0950 : GOLDCanoeing - The Spanish have helped themselves to a canoeing gold as their duo of Anguila Craviotto and Perucho Perez win the K2 500m race. Germany and Belarus take silver and bronze respectively for those of you who have an unhealthy interest in the sport.
0940 : Doping - A bit of doping news for all you drugs fans, Ukrainian weightlifter Igor Razoronov has become the sixth athlete kicked out of the Beijing Olympics for doping offences. Razoronov tested positive for the steroid nandrolone after finishing sixth in the 105-kilogram division. He's obviously not taking enough if he only finished sixth.
0936 : Synchronised Swimming - A bit of drama at the pool as a member of the Japanese synchronised swimming team suffered breathing difficulties and collapsed, having to be carried from the pool on a stretcher. Pleased to report she has now fully recovered, the Japanese press attache takes up the story. "The team leader told me what happened to her was too much breathing. She's okay. She's clearly conscious and it's nothing serious. She's in bed, lying down. She's all right." Too much breathing? I would have thought not enough would have been the problem, but there you go.
0930 : Mountain Biking - Frenchman Julien Absalon continues to school the field in the mountain biking. There's still a way to go but he's miles ahead and, barring something silly, will take gold at a canter.
0924 : Canoeing - No medal for Lucy Wainwright in the women's K1 500m class I'm afraid. Apparently she had an outside chance of making the podium but never really got going as she trailed home in seventh some way off the pace. The winner is the splendidly-named Inna Osypenko-Radomska from Ukraine who edges out some 43-year-old Italian on the line.
0918 : GOLDSynchronised Swimming - Another gold for Russia as they win the team synchronised swimming event, this is where eight women compete at a time. Spain take the silver and China rack up another medal with the bronze.
0915 : BRONZE Baseball - The United States have beaten Japan 8-4 to claim the bronze medal in the baseball. I would have thought that represents failure really, a bit like Team GB failing to win snooker or darts gold if they were to be introduced as Olympic sports.
0910 : GOLD Canoeing - I step in and am immediately the bearer of bad news. A certain Maxim Opalev has just won the men's C1 500m class for Russia which lifts those blasted Russkis ahead of Team GB into third in the medal table.
0900 : Commentary box change - And on such controversy, I bow out. I'm back in the early hours to cover the final day - including the men's marathon. Enjoy the rest of the penultimate day's action in Beijing.
0858 : Taekwondo - Stephenson finishes with: "The judges have taken my dreams away." You can't help but feel sorry for the girl from Doncaster. I've never said that before.
0856 : Taekwondo - Stephenson is gutted, and still furious. She says: "She didn't win, I won. That's what the judges can do in taekwondo. My foot hit her face."
0854 : Taekwondo - The judges rule in favour of the Chinese. Frustration for Stephenson, and she isn't happy. She's been robbed to be fair - it was a clean head shot. I'm labelling it scandalous. My 0415 update was utter garbage. I'm off the fence now! Unbelievable scenes.
0853 : Taekwondo - Stephenson loses - but she is furious and the corner judges come together to discuss a possible head shot. If it is Stephenson will win!
0850 : Taekwondo - Zhong goes 1-0 up against Stephenson. The commentators are questioning the judges again, as the Brit looked to have immediately squared things up.
0846 : Taekwondo - Sarah Stevenson's back in action - against reigning Chinese Olympic champion Chen Zhong. It's a tough ask, but she's started well.
0833 : BRONZE Canoeing - Tim Brabants wins the bronze medal for Team GB! There was confusion as he was called the runner-up at first, and the photo with the Canadian does look tight. Bronze it is though.
0832 : GOLD Canoeing - Ken Wallace wins gold for Australia with a late charge!
0831 : Canoeing - Right then. Britain have a live medal chance here. Dr. Tim Brabants has already won a gold medal, and he's going for another in the K1 500 final. He's in lane one. Here's a familiar chant to all British sport fans: C'mon Tim!
0830 : BRONZEHandball - Korea beat Hungary 33-28 for the women's bronze.
0825 : Not content with celebrating the finest moments from this Olympics, Steve from South Africa has emailed in to big up Sir Steve Redgrave, who wasn't a bad rower in his prime. He says: "With all this talk of Bolt, Hoy, and the American swimmer, what is his name? Have we all forgotten about Sir Steve Redgrave who must be the greatest Olympian ever as he competed at the top of his sport over a 20 year period and won 5 gold medals, that to me is dedication. Well done team GB from a Pom in South Africa and if you think the Aussies are getting a hard time try South Africa with only one bronze medal! The joke here is that they took 3 Gold Medals yesterday but were caught at the security check point......" Cheers Steve, I've always time for a quick mention of the great man.
0820 : Mountain Biking - Oliver Beckingsale's doing okay, he's up with the leading pack, but Killeen's early blow has hit him hard. He's over two minutes behind.
0803 : Mountain Biking - They're off in the men's cross country, and there's early woe for Team GB. Liam Killeen crashes early doors and he looks out of the race. Terrible bad luck for the Brit.
0750 : BRONZE Volleyball - China beat Cuba 3-1 to secure the women's bronze.
0745 : It seems like plenty of you favour a points system for the medals table. Stephen Allix holds this view. He says: "I reckon the medal table should be done on points and not just number of golds (say 5 points for gold, three for silver and one for bronze). Downside of this is it would put Russia above us in the medal table, but China would definitely be above USA. Top 4 would be: China 311pts, USA 299 pts, Russia 162 pts, GB 142 pts. Still not bad though, with a population of approx 66m, only beaten by countries with populations in excess of 300m." Seems a fair way of doing things Stephen.
0730 : Athletics - Looking ahead to the track and field today, and predictably at this stage of the games there are plenty of medals up for grabs. From 1200 there is the women's high jump final, men's javelin, men's 800m, women's 1500m, men's 5000m, women's 4x400m and men's 4x400m. Lisa Dobriskey runs for Team GB in the women's 1500m, while we've got teams in both relay events. Dobriskey was told she would never run by doctors because of her dodgy knees - the men in white coats said the same thing about me because of my fallen arches. Both me and Dobriskey proved them wrong. Medical miracles.
0717 : Recap/Look forward - If you're just getting up, good morning! You haven't missed too much throughout the night to be fair. Tom Daley has qualified for the men's 10m platform final in the diving, while Pete Waterfield narrowly missed out, Sarah Stevenson advanced to the taekwondo quarter-finals, and Argentina have just won gold in the football. Later on this morning we've got plenty to look forward to, with James Degale fighting for gold in the boxing, Tim Brabants going for another medal in the canoeing and Daley and Stevenson continuing in the diving and taekwondo respectively. Don't miss a moment - follow it all here!
0711 : BRONZE Baseball - USA have beaten Japan to secure bronze in the baseball.
0703 : Breakfast - A flurry of brownie bites as a couple of emails come in. Trevor Moores is delighted with Team GB's modern-day record medal haul, while Alan Hay-Parker is wary of those pesky Russians who look a good bet to nab third in the table. Our early man Gareth Friel has just walked in and he looked sickened when he discovered I'd eaten 19 brownie bites throughout my shift. I didn't notice it was that many, but have just noticed they are suitable for vegetarians. I didn't expect to find any meat in them, but it's a relief nonetheless that I definitely won't.
0656 : GOLD Football - And Argentina win the gold! It was never in doubt to be honest. A great goal from Di Maria settled it. Well done Argentina.
0651 : Football - Five minutes of injury time in the football. No idea where that came from!
0646 : Volleyball - China are 2-1 up on Cuba in the women's volleyball as they battle for bronze.
0642 : Football - Seven minutes to go and Nigeria almost equalise! Everton's Victor Anichebe got in front of his man at the near post but couldn't quite steer his effort home.
0630 : Football/Handball/Volleyball - I'm back. Still 1-0 to Argentina in the football. 20 minutes to go. I think it's in the bag. The women's bronze medal match has just started in the handball (South Korea v Hungary), while the volleyball equivalent has been under way a while. It's 1-1 between Cuba and China in the latter, with the hosts well ahead in the third.
0617 : Football - GOAL! Argentina go 1-0 up, and it's a lovely dinked finish from Angel Di Maria. Messi played the vital pass. As I punched the air in delight I turned some lights on behind me in the office. I can't have moved a muscle since my unscheduled toilet break. Better go for a stretch.
0610 : GOLD Mountain Biking - Amongst all the excitement I've missed a medal. Sabine Spitz takes gold for Germany in the women's cross country.
0601 : Adrian Chiles says the cheerleaders have cheered everyone up at half-time. He sickens me. After lumping on Argentina at odds-on, they are now odds-against. I'm not worried. They'll kick on second half.
0555 : Dave McBain's emailed in with his favourite moments of Beijing 2008. He says: "How can anyone discuss the best performance of the games without mentioning Chris Hoy's 3 Gold Medals, Bradley Wiggins 2, and the cycling team domination in the Velodrome with multiple world records. This has to eclipse all others..." Thanks Dave.
0545 : Football - It's 0-0 at the break between Argentina and Nigeria. Why oh why did I underestimate the Super Eagles?
0539 : In the baseball, USA are 8-4 in front of Japan in the race for bronze, while GB beat South Korea 5-2 in the hockey. There's also some Taekwondo going on, but I've lost interest since Stevenson won. The latest on the 'handover' set that features Becks, Jimmy Page and the lovely Leona - it cost 2.5million pounds. For eight minutes. I'm expecting the best thing I've ever seen in the world. Ever.
0536 : Football - Paul Ainsworth feels Nigeria are in the ascendancy. They are. He hopes I 'didn't dump on Argentina.' I did. Let's see what else is going on in Beijing.
0534 : Football - I don't know about wings but a certain energy drink has given me something. I was sure my unscheduled toilet break would bring about an Argentine goal. It didn't. 0-0. I fear it may stay this way.
0530 : Football - Nigeria are coming into this. Half an hour gone and I'm just starting to get twitchy. Argentina are slowly drifting in the betting as time ticks on. A goal would be nice. I don't need stress this early on a Saturday morning.
0524 : Chris Cotterell, who emailed in earlier, kicks us off. He says: "I think most people would say Rebecca's 2 golds in swimming is the best moment but for me it was watching Michael Phelps take the gold in the 100m butterfly final where he won by 0.01 seconds, it was amazing. Closely followed by Bolt on the track, he is just sensational. Will we ever see a better sprinter in our lifetime? I can't wait to see him smash his own world record when he doesn't give up after 80m's to waltz to the finish." Usain is the man. Could he go 9.5secs? It seems ridiculous to even ask such a question.
0523 : It's a couple of hours since I requested a few emails and I'm getting a bit peckish. So how about your favourite moments from the last two weeks? It's been a pretty sensational games if you ask me. Send me your highlights to ben.linfoot@bskyb.com.
0521 : Football - Penalty shout for Argentina as Messi goes down. Even I don't think that was a spot-kick.
0516 : Hockey/Football - 4-1 to GB now. Fifth place is assured. Phew! Still 0-0 in the football. Argentina are in control. They really are, although Nigeria have defended well in the early stages.
0511 : Mayor of London Boris Johnson will be at the official handover too. He's predicting that in the run up to the 2012 games we'll see a decline in teenage obesity and crime. I'm actually predicting an increase in the number of knife-wielding fat kids in the next four years. We'll see who's right, Boris.
0507 : Hockey - GB are 2-1 up against South Korea in the hockey. Fifth place beckons for the Brits.
0506 : Table Tennis - Sweden's Jorgen Persson has gone out to China's Wang Hao in the semis. Jubilation amongst the home crowd.
0502 : Norman Allin's emailed in from Thailand. Hi Norm. He asks: "The Bangkok Post over here reports that at tomorrow's closing ceremony David Beckham will be atop said red double decker bus booting footballs into the crowd... any truth in that?" Oh yes, Norman, oh yes. Here's what happens in that golden 30 seconds: 6.30min to 7min: David Beckham appears on another lift accompanied by Tayyiba, plus a violinist and a cellist, to represent the London Symphony Orchestra who played on this version of 'Whole Lotta Love'. Beckham is handed the football by Tayyiba and kicks it into the crowd of athletes in the centre of the field." Meanwhile, Argentina should've had a penalty. It was crystal clear.
0500 : Football - Nigeria kick-off the Olympic final. Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi are amongst the Argentine line-up. They can't lose.
0455 : Football - Five minutes to kick-off. I'm financially involved on Argentina. Expect a biased set of updates, particularly if things are going well. I'm anti-Super Eagles for the next 90 minutes.
0450 : Stephen Oliver has sent in an incredibly detailed email with his own medal table rankings. On his points table, China and the USA are tied, with Russia ahead of GB in third. He asks which is the correct medal table - ours, where ranking is determined by gold medals, or America's, where ranking is determined by total medals. I'm assured that ours is correct, Stephen. I suppose it makes sense - it seems wrong that you could top a medal table by getting a skip full of bronze but no gold.
0441 : Hockey - GB are playing South Korea in a match that decides fifth and sixth place. It's 0-0 at half-time. Sounds like a thriller.
0438 : Diving - Waterfield narrowly misses out on a place in the final. Daley qualifies in eighth, a superb performance from the 14-year-old.
0436 : Diving - It's touch and go whether Waterfield makes it to the final. Fingers crossed we'll have two in there.
0435 : Football - Well, the highlight of this shift for me is the gold medal match between Argentina and Nigeria at 0500. The South Americans are a shade of odds-on. That's got to be worth a punt hasn't it? I might wade in. What a start to the day it could be for my betting account.
0430 : Tony Thomas, a Welsh exile in Japan has emailed in. He's not a happy chappy. He says: "This has been the greatest games ever for GB and I don't want to be a party pooper BUT, I have one criticism, pertaining to athletes' costumes, be it in the pool, on the track, in boats, on bikes, anywhere, GB uniforms do not indicate that Wales is part of the Union. Could someone not have thought of putting a green stripe in somewhere?" Thanks Tony. We could fit in a little bit of green, couldn't we? The poor old Welsh.
0428 : Diving - 62.90 from Daley at the Water Cube, a drop in standards but he has qualified for the final. Well done Tom! The final's at 1300 BST.
0415 : Paul Wilson thinks I'm perky this morning. Thanks Paul, how the fingers can tap a lie! Paul asks if I think the home judges have leaned towards their own athletes at this Olympics. To be honest Paul, and I'm not sitting on the fence here, from what I have seen it hasn't been a problem - the Chinese have just been pretty sensational to my eyes. I can understand that the judges can be swayed by the partisan home crowds, but, on the whole, I think they have been pretty fair.
0413 : Diving - Another good dive from Daley, 89.10 this time. He's improving with every effort.
0408 : Diving - With two rounds to go in the semi-final, Waterfield and Daley are seventh and ninth respectively. The top 12 qualify for the final.
0406 : Diving - Meanwhile, at the Water Cube, Peter Waterfield moves up to fourth after an excellent effort. Nice one Pete.
0405 : So, how brilliant does this handover sound? Shipping forecast, sea shanties, Jerusalem. It's all very British. Want to know more? Here we go: The double decker halts at a bus stop and is surrounded by dancers dressed as contemporary London characters. A 10-year-old girl from east London, Tayyiba Dudhwala, who was chosen in a Blue Peter competition, receives a football from another girl Erika Tham. 3min to 4min: The bus transforms, the top half folding down in segments to show a privet hedge cut into shapes of the London skyline: Tower Bridge, Battersea Power Station, the Houses of Parliament. 4min to 6.30min: Leona Lewis emerges from the bus on a rising column dressed in gold and singing an RnB aria. The music reaches a crescendo and Jimmy Page appears on a rising stage, with a guitar and amplifier. After a pause, the first guitar riffs of the Led Zeppelin song 'Whole Lotta Love' blast out, and Leona Lewis starts singing. Absolutely brilliant. I, for one, cannot wait.
0358 : Baseball - For all of you emailing to tell me the USA baseball stars are not at the Olympics, I know. I went down a road I should never have gone down. I'm sorry. Please stop now, I can't take any more brownies for the moment.
0356 : Want to know about this exciting handover at the closing ceremony then? The moment that Beijing hands over the interlocking rings to London? Here's a section of the press release: 1min to 1.30min: A red double decker bus makes a dramatic entrance into the stadium and drives around the track to a musical sequence combining elements of the shipping forecast, Jerusalem, Greensleeves and sea shanties with the harmonies based on the Big Ben chimes.
0354 : Diving - Back at the Water Cube, Tom Daley produces his best dive so far. He scores 85.40 for that effort.
0353 : Taekwondo - Stevenson wins 3-2! She's through to the quarter-finals. That was a good effort against a tough opponent in Jordan's Nadin Dawani.
0352 : Taekwondo - Stevenson edges ahead 3-2 with 42 seconds left. Tense stuff.
0351 : Taekwondo - It's 2-2 going into the final two minutes of Sarah Stevenson's match.
0350 : No sooner has one brownie gone down and I'm indulging in another. Brian Whitelaw enlightens me with this little nugget of information: "One thing about your comment on the USA playing for bronze in baseball and the reference to the "World Series". It is called that because at its inception, it was sponsored by The World newspaper. However, our American friends do consider the champions of that series to be the best in the world, rightly or wrongly." Wrongly Brian, wrongly!
0348 : Email - I have feedback, and it's negative stuff from Chris Cotterell. He ends his email with doom and gloom, saying: "I feel sorry for Sir Sebastian Coe who has put so much effort into London 2012, but he won't get the funds he needs let alone anything to top Beijing. These have been the best olympics for a long time and I can't see it changing anytime soon." You just wait for the exciting handover at the closing ceremony Chris, apparently Led Zeppelin and Leona Lewis are involved.
0345 : Taekwondo - It's a first round match for Stevenson, but she's fighting for a place in the quarter-final.
0344 : Taekwondo - Sarah Stevenson enters the arena for Team GB in Beijing. She was close to a bronze as a 17-year-old in Sydney. Can she get a medal this time?
0341 : Diving - This Chinese boy can dive! Huge marks for Huo Liang. The Water Cube goes wild.
0340 : Diving - Daley's improving. He scores 76.80, but still needs more to make the top 12 - and the final.
0335 : Diving - A rubbish dive from Reuben Ross of Canada! He clumsily pushed himself off the board. He was lucky to score 54.00.
0333 : Taekwondo - Sarah Stevenson's on soon for Team GB. I shall talk you through her performance as she kicks and screams.
0330 : Baseball - Just noticed USA are playing Japan for the bronze medal! Never will I take the 'world' series seriously again. Not that I ever did. It's Cuba vs South Korea in the gold medal match, much later on today.
0327 : Diving - Pretty boy Helm scores well again. 72.00 for Waterfield, who drops down a notch or too.
0324 : No emails yet. And here I was thinking I'd be flooded with it being the popular diving/taekwondo/table tennis/baseball shift. Maybe I should kick-off a discussion. What's your favourite moment of the past two weeks? Who do you think can bring home the medals for Team GB today? Can London 2012 better the spectacle we've seen in Beijing? E-mail me at ben.linfoot@bskyb.com. I've got a box full of 25 brownie bites, and I'm going to have one for every bit of feedback I receive. It's all that keeps me going.
0320 : Diving - Better stuff from Daley at the Water Cube. He scores 72.00 this time.
0319 : Taekwondo - An intriguing sport. I have no idea what's going on, but it's 3-3 between two ladies from Spain and Sweden. They kick each other and scream at regular intervals. I like it.
0316 : Diving - Let me stress I have nothing against the Russians. I've just got one eye on the medal table.
0313 : Diving - Gleb Gelperin of Russia races into an early lead after scoring 88.0. Nooooooooo! Anyone but the Russians!
0311 : Diving - The commentator has just described Matthew Helm as a pretty diver. I have to agree. Pete Waterfield, meanwhile, produces an excellent Pike. 81.0 for the Brit - apparently he's diving out of his skin. Urgh!
0308 : Diving - The Chinese love the opening effort of Huo Liang. He scores 81.4. Screams aplenty in the Water Cube.
0305 : Diving - I suppose it wasn't perfect. I didn't actually drive all night. It was more like 20 minutes, although google maps insist it should've taken me 27. I am the spartacus of the M62. Back at the Water Cube, Tom Daley scores 71.4 on his first dive.
0300 : As we wait for the action to start I must mention the most enjoyable drive to work. Amongst the highlights on the radio was Phil Oakley's 80s classic. I was nodding my head as the beat kicked in, tapping my thigh to the swooning guitar, and signalling fours to the boundary by the time Phil bellowed Electric Dreams. This was followed by Roy Orbison's 'I drove all night.' There couldn't have been a more perfect song for the occassion.
0255 : Let's not forget Pete Waterfield in the diving - he represents Team GB too. They should be under way at the Water Cube in five minutes time. If you've got any Beijing banter, or want to get anything Olympic related off your chest - feel free to send me an e-mail at ben.linfoot@bskyb.com. No smut please. Or flirting. Just good, clean fun.
0230 : Welcome, to the penultimate day of Beijing 2008! What a few weeks it has been, but all good things must come to an end. All eyes are on the Water Cube in the early hours today, as young Tom Daley dives for Team GB in the men's 10m semi-final, while later on there's a host of highlights including Argentina v Nigeria in the footy gold medal match and the men's 800m final at the Bird's Nest. Don't miss a thing by following this very page!
