Newcastle have signed tighthead prop Juan Pablo Orlandi from Aviva Premiership rivals Bath.

The Argentina front-row forward has made 20 appearances for the west country club since joining from Racing Metro in February 2013.

Falcons' rugby director Dean Richards believes Orlandi will boost Newcastle's squad depth next term.

He said: "We're delighted to be able to bring a player of Juan Pablo's calibre into the club.

"Over recent months we've seen a number of front row players unavailable for selection due to injury and international duties, and to be able to add Juan Pablo to our options in that area provides us with greater depth on either side of the scrum.

"Juan Pablo is a strong guy who has already proven he can make an impact at the highest level, and we look forward to integrating him into our side over the coming weeks."

The prop revealed he had decided to move to the north-east in order to improve his chances of making Argentina's 2015 World Cup squad.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Bath, and I’ve made good friends here and will take away some great memories,” said the 31-year-old, capped 15 times by the Pumas.

“I’m taking the opportunity to join Falcons now because I need more game time, especially with the World Cup fast approaching.”

Bath Rugby head coach Mike Ford said: “Juan Pablo is a much-liked character who will be missed, but we fully understand and support his reason for joining Newcastle. He’s an accomplished tighthead and I’m sure he’ll do well at Kingston Park.”
