Shane Geraghty will miss England's RBS Six Nations trip to France after suffering a knee injury on Sunday.
The talented London Irish back, who is equally at home at fly-half or centre, had been tipped to play a part in the clash with Les Bleus on Saturday.
However Geraghty has returned to his club after going off at half-time in the Premiership match with Leicester.
The 21-year-old was assessed my England's medical team on Sunday night and on Monday morning - however they decided he could not be considered for the trip to Paris.
Geraghty will now undergo an MRI scan to assess the full extent of the injury.
A statement from the RFU read: "Following a clinical assessment by the England medical team on Sunday night and Monday morning it was clear that Shane could not be considered for the RBS 6 Nations game against France on Saturday.
"Shane will have an MRI scan this afternoon and a further update will be issued in due course.
"All members of the England squad are being medically assessed and rehabilitated or conditioned as appropriate."
While Geraghty has been ruled out Paul Sackey, Jamie Noon and Steve Borthwick are expected to be fit to fight for their places in the match-day 22.
Coach Brian Ashton is set to announce his squad on Tuesday.
