Kimiko Date-Krumm could be forced to retire from tennis due to a problematic knee condition.

Japanese veteran Date-Krumm underwent arthroscopic surgery last week to clean out her left knee but the procedure revealed the meniscus to be badly worn out.

The 45-year-old, who previously called time on her career in 1997 before making a comeback 12 years later at the age of 37, has been told she will require further surgery if she wishes to continue playing.

"As an athlete, it will be beyond tough to live life without taking part in sport," former world No 4 Date-Krumm said.

"If I decide to have surgery again, it's unavoidable that it will take a long time for me to come back.
