Johanna Konta made it through to the third round of qualifying at the French Open after she beat Russia's Elizaveta Kulichkova 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.

The British No 2 lost at the final hurdle in qualifying last year but a gutsy win against Kulichkova, ranked 34 places higher, maintains her hopes of joining Heather Watson in the main draw.

"I'm really happy to get through that one," Konta said.

"I stayed tough out there, she's really tough to play, she doesn't give you much rhythm and she takes time away from you.

"I had to really scramble today and take my chances where I could and that's why I was so pleased at the end."

Konta will face France's Clothilde De Bernardi in round three.

Naomi Broady's bid for qualification is over as she was thrashed 6-1 6-1 by Australia's Anastasia Rodionova, while fellow Briton Brydan Klein is also out after he lost 6-3 6-1 to Argentina's Facundo Arguello.

"It was disappointing but I'm playing a player close to the top 100 who has grown up on clay courts in Argentina," Klein said.

"I tried to mix it up but I wasn't completely feeling the ball. I just didn't find the corners or angles enough to give myself a decent chance."
