Andy Murray has been handed a tough draw at the US Open as he bids for a second title at Flushing Meadows.

The British No 1, seeded only eighth after a lean run of form since undergoing back surgery, has been drawn in the same quarter as top seed Novak Djokovic.

Murray faces a tricky opener against Dutchman Robin Haase when the final Grand Slam event of the year starts next week, live on Sky Sports.

The Scot had to fight back from two sets down to beat him Haase in the 2011 tournament, although he was an easy winner in the Australian Open last year.

Djokovic is Murray's scheduled opponent in the last eight, but he faces a difficult task to reach that stage as in-form Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a potential threat in the fourth round.

Tsonga beat Murray on his way to the Rogers Cup title in Toronto earlier this month, although the Frenchman has only twice progressed beyond the third round in New York.

Cirstea test for Watson

In the women's singles draw, British No 1 Heather Watson will look to build on her encouraging recent form that has lifted her back into the world top 50.

Watson faces Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the first round, but Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard is likely to be next up in round two.

Johanna Konta qualified for the main draw on ranking for the first time this year and plays Israel's Shahar Peer.

The standout match of the women's opening round pits top seed and two-time defending champion Serena Williams against exciting American teenager Taylor Townsend.
