Bolton bomber shows no respect for champion

Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan has once again bad-mouthed potential opponent Jon Thaxton as the duo prepare to return to action at the weekend. Undefeated Khan dismissed Thaxton as a 'five-round fighter' and is hoping to get it on with the British lightweight champion sooner rather than later. The Bolton bruiser is not allowed to fight for a British title until he turns 21 on December 8, but a date with Thaxton is likely to be set for the New Year. However, Khan sees the veteran as just another fighter standing in his way to world title honours.

Two fights

"Thaxton is too old, too slow and too predictable," said Khan ahead of Saturday's Commonwealth title defence against Scott Lawton. "I will want to fight Thaxton after another two fights. He hasn't fought anybody as strong and quick as me, and if I did fight him I'd box his head off and just keep hitting him until the ref stepped in. "He is a good fighter but he is very predictable. Every punch he throws carries power so that will knacker him out. He's a four or five-round fighter and that will get less as he gets older." Khan hit the deck for the first time in his career against Willie Limond in July, but got up to take the Scotsman's Commonwealth strap with an eighth-round stoppage, and has vowed to learn from the experience. "It was meant to happen. I got knocked down but I got back up again and came back stronger. It's not going to dishearten me or knock my confidence. I'm going to come back stronger. "I definitely think the next five fights are going to be tough fights for me. I'm going to be progressing very quickly and I believe in the next year I can become world champion."
