Maloney says champion needs to meet expectations

Promoter Frank Maloney says the pressure is on Jamie McDonnell as he prepares to defend his European bantamweight title on January 22. McDonnell will make his second defence of the belt against Belgian Stephane Jamoye in his home town of Doncaster in what promises to be his toughest fight yet. The 21-year-old from Liege suffered his first defeat last August - a narrow points verdict - but remains a good prospect. And Maloney believes the expectation of victory for McDonnell is something else for the former British champion to worry about. "Jamie upset Ian Napa and Jermoe Arnould last year, but the pressure is now on him," Maloney said. "He is fighting in his hometown and most people expect him to win and go on and challenge for world honours." Chief support sees former British super-featherweight champion Carl Johanneson continue his road back to challenging for domestic honours against Akaash Bhatia, while Napa faces a win-or-quit clash with southpaw Terry Flannigan.
