Ex-champ steps up to lightweight for ring return

Former world champion Alex Arthur will return to action at lightweight on the undercard of Ricky Burns' Commonwealth super-featherweight title defence against Michael Gomez on March 27. Arthur, who lost his WBO belt to Nicky Cook last year, will step up to 135lb for the first time after blaming weight problems for the points loss at the MEN Arena in September. The defeat was only the second in Arthur's career after he was knockout out by Gomez in 2003, and promoter Frank Warren believes the move up a division could see the 30-year-old become world champion again. "Nicky proved when he beat Alex that moving up can give you a new lease of life," he told Frankwarren.tv. "Alex lost his title in September, but that's history now and he has to re-focus and aim to get back into world title contention at lightweight. "He's a quality operator and I believe this decision could turn out to be the best he's ever made." The show at the Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow will be screened live on Sky Sports.
