Jamie Moore will get his long-awaited shot at the European light-middleweight title on Friday night as he bids to prove himself a world champion.
The Salford-born southpaw (30-3) has endured a fruitless pursuit of the European belt since vacating the British crown in December 2007.
But he takes on former European champion Michele Piccirillo (50-4) for the vacant belt at Wigan's Robin Park Arena and is determined to succeed.
Victory against Piccirillo should push Moore into the top five in the WBC rankings and he knows there is a lot riding on the fight.
"By no means am I overlooking this fight, but you have always got to plan ahead," Moore told the
Manchester Evening News.
"I can't see why, by the end of the year, I'm not either fighting for the title or in the mandatory position for the WBC. But none of that stuff will happen unless I do a good job.
"For three years I've been waiting for this sort of fight. I want expectation on my shoulders because I perform better. If I do the job I think I can, then I think a lot of people are going to take notice."
Moore's promoter Frank Maloney is also brimming with confidence and feels the 30-year-old can go on to prove himself an international superstar.
"His aim is to fight for the world title by the end of 2009," Maloney added.
