India won the battle of the Group B heavyweights in the Under-19 World Cup after beating fellow three-time champions Australia by 100 runs in Mount Maunganui.

India's top three - captain Prithvi Shaw (94), Manjot Kalra (86) and Shubman Gill (63) - each passed fifty in their side's 328-7 while Australia seamer Jack Edwards bagged four wickets.

Edwards capped a fine all-round game with 73 at the top of the order for Australia but they slumped from 145-2 to 228 all out - Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi scooping three wicket apiece.

South Africa captain Raynard van Tonder struck 143 off 121 balls, an innings that included 14 fours and five sixes, as the 2014 champions thrashed Kenya by 169 runs in Group A. SA v KENYA SCORECARD

The Proteas racked up 341-7, with opener Jiveshan Pillay hitting 62 and Jade de Klerk (28no off 23) and Gerald Coetzee (36no off 14) clubbing 65 runs in the final five overs.

South Africa's bowling attack - which included Makhaya Ntini's son, Thando - restricted Kenya to 172-7 in reply, though Jasraj Kundi (41) and Ankit Hirani (35no) did share a stand of 57 for the seventh wicket.

Plus, Ireland kicked off their campaign with a seven-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in Group D - Sri Lanka chasing down Ireland's total of 207-8, in which Jamie Grassi top scored with 75. SL v IRELAND SCORECARD

Ireland sniffed victory when they reduced Sri Lanka to 9-2 and 51-3 but Pothotuwa Arachchige Dhananjaya (101no) and captain Pasqual Mendis (74no) subsequently steered the Asian side to victory with an unbroken partnership of 157.
