Former England captain Michael Atherton believes it is the right decision to call up Mark Wood into the England Test squad as a replacement for the injured Olly Stone.

Durham paceman Mark Wood will replace injured seamer Olly Stone in England's squad for the three-Test series against Windies, live on Sky Sports Cricket.

Wood, 29, comes in for Warwickshire seamer Stone, who was ruled out after sustaining a stress fracture in his lower back.

Stone will return to England on Friday with Wood due to arrive in the West Indies over the weekend, ahead of the first Test on Wednesday.

Wood played the most recent of his 12 Tests against Pakistan last May - taking just two wickets as England lost the first Test by nine wickets.

Reflecting on his call-up, Wood said: "I am really pleased to get the call but I do feel for Olly in these circumstances.

"I have put a lot of work into my game when I was away with Lions in the UAE during November and December and I took on board what the coaches were looking for while I was there. We discussed the way I trained, being more efficient with my preparation and having a positive mindset."

Former England captain Mike Atherton, part of Sky Sports Cricket's commentary team, said: "Pace is always handy in this part of the world. The pitches used to be quick and there was no swing or seam.

"Things have slightly changed but still you'd think that a bowler of Mark Wood's quality - he has pace and the ability to reverse swing the ball (and the pitches here are going to be bare, regardless) - has the attributes to be useful.

"Jamie Overton of Somerset would have been in the frame and maybe Jamie Porter, although you think of him - maybe unfairly so - more as an English type bowler, of the type who have not always done well here in the Caribbean."

Overton and Porter, of Essex, will remain in India with the England Lions for now. It was on Lions duty that Wood re-established his red-ball credentials before Christmas, taking five wickets against Pakistan A and impressing with his pace.

England bowler Stuart Broad says they have all bases covered as they head into the tour of the West Indies

An Ashes winner in 2015, Wood has 30 Test wickets at 41.73 but has been a more regular part of the limited-overs squad in recent years.
