Captain Root was temporarily placed in quarantine during South Africa's second innings of 272 all out on day three of the first Test at Centurion.

Buttler, meanwhile, was off the field all day with Jonny Bairstow deputising as wicketkeeper.

The virus ruled all-rounder Chris Woakes, batsman Ollie Pope and spinner Jack Leach out of the match and has so far affected 10 players and four members of backroom staff on the tour.

Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer as well Leach sat out England's two warm-up games, while Mark Wood and Joe Denly have also also been ill and Ben Stoeks suffered from dehydration on day one of the Boxing Day Test.
