South Africa reached 309-6 at stumps on the first day of the second Test against England at Trent Bridge on Friday.
Vernon Philander was 54 not out and Chris Morris 23 not out, their unbroken seventh-wicket partnership currently worth 74 runs to frustrate England, who lead the four-match series 1-0 after a 211-run victory in the first Test at Lord's last week.

Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock bolstered South Africa's innings with a third-wicket stand of 113 after James Anderson had earlier claimed his 300th Test wicket in England - Dean Elgar caught superbly by Liam Dawson.
Amla became only the fourth South African to score 8,000 Test runs but like De Kock couldn't convert his fifty into three figures as Stuart Broad (3-47) dismissed both.
