Dinesh Karthik could play his first Test in eight years later this month when India conclude their series in South Africa.
The 32-year-old wicketkeeper has been called up to replace Wriddhiman Saha for the third and final Test in Johannesburg, which starts on January 24.
Saha has been India's first choice wicketkeeper since Mahendra Singh Dhoni retired in 2014, but missed the second Test due a hamstring injury.
Saha, who took 10 catches during the first Test in Cape Town, suffered an upper left hamstring tendon injury during training last Thursday and was replaced by Parthiv Patel for the second match in Centurion.
Karthik's most recent Test outing came against Bangladesh in January 2010, although he did represent his country in 50 and 20-over matches as recently as December.
Karthik has played 23 Tests since making his debut in 2004.
