Nacer Bouhanni made the most of a flat finish to win stage six of the Vuelta a Espana in a bunch sprint.
Bouhanni finished last, more than 25 minutes adrift, on Wednesday's more mountainous stage but the coastal finish in San Javier proved far more to the French sprinter's liking.
The Cofidis rider had been handed a 30-second penalty to rub salt into his wounds on stage five, although his team denied the sanction had been due to an argument between management and Bouhanni.
"I was very motivated to turn this situation around," Bouhanni said. "I really wanted to get another important win."
Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) retains a 41-second overall lead ahead of Team Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski, with Britain's Simon Yates also avoiding a late crash to keep fourth place.
The crash came with 25km remaining and cost both Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) and Molard's team leader Thibaut Pinot nearly two minutes, putting a dent in their hopes of winning the year's final Grand Tour.
Friday's seventh stage could be ideal for a breakaway, with the uphill finish and third category climb with less than 20km remaining possibly too much for the pure sprinters.
