Sky F1 exclusive: Fernando Alonso on where he is among F1's elite

"I'm 9.5 in all areas and l try to benefit from that," Alonso tells Sky F1

Fernando Alonso has given a candid appraisal to Sky Sports F1 of where he sees himself in the pantheon of Formula 1's all-time leading drivers.

The two-time world champion is celebrating his 300th grand prix at this weekend's Canadian GP, exclusively live on Sky F1.

Although the Spaniard has not won a race since 2013, many in the F1 paddock consider Alonso not only to be the best driver in the sport at present, but one of the best ever.

But how does Alonso rank himself among the greats of F1?

In an exclusive interview with Sky F1 which was broadcast during the build-up to qualifying in Montreal, Alonso said: "I think l am one of the best drivers to have ever raced in F1, but probably not the best.

"There are drivers who are better than me in different areas of the weekend. I am probably not the fastest driver in qualifying, or the fastest in the race, or the fastest in wet conditions.

"But I am 9.5 in all areas and l try to benefit from that."

Alonso missed the Monaco GP a year ago to compete in the Indy 500 - part of the Triple Crown the Spaniard is aiming to complete before the end of his career.

As a previous victor in Monaco, Alonso has already secured one third of the Triple Crown and will debut at Le Mans later this month, driving for Toyota.

"The Triple Crown is an attractive target because it is so difficult to achieve. These are the three biggest races in the world of motorsport: the Indy 500, Monaco and Le Mans. It is challenging because all three require different style and a different driving technique."

"If you challenge yourself and try to be the best in all areas, you have to be a complete driver.

"I don't want to just be a good driver, I want to be a complete driver and hopefully the best driver in the world."
