Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero helped Atletico Madrid to a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.
The victory helps to keep alive the capital club's faint hopes of forcing their way in the European picture this term.
Atletico now sit 11th in the Primera Liga, eight points adrift of the top six and 12 short of the top four.
Bilbao currently occupy a standing which would be good enough to secure continental competition, but will be disappointed to have come unstuck on the road after going five games without defeat.
They fared admirably at Vicente Calderon for 54 minutes, giving as good as they got.
However, Forlan then broke the deadlock when he was fed by Juan Valera and calmly fired low into the bottom corner.
Bilbao threw everything they had at Atletico in an effort to snatch an equaliser, but their finishing let them down far too often.
In the end it was the hosts who snatched a second goal of the game, with Aguero drilling home four minutes from time to wrap up the points for Quique Sanchez Flores' side.
