Sean McConville missed an injury-time penalty as Bury held on to beat Accrington 2-1 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Section first round.

Bury had raced into a two-goal lead before Stanley came back into it, but there was late heartbreak with McConville blasting over a 92nd-minute spot-kick.

Hallam Hope opened the scoring for the Shakers on 46 minutes when Tom Pope, who had only just come on, set up the opportunity for him to fire the ball beyond Ross Etheridge at the far post.

The Sky Bet League 1 side doubled their advantage after 70 minutes when Jacob Mellis sent Andrew Tutte racing through and he fired low into the bottom corner of the net.
