    Northampton too strong for Stanley

Northampton secured their first win of the season with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Accrington. The Cobblers had failed to scored this season before their trip to the Crown Ground but Steve Guinan scored a wonder goal after just three minutes, getting on the end of Ryan Gilligan's pass and rifling the ball into the top of the net. It was their first goal in 493 minutes of competitive football and they doubled their tally for the season after 18 minutes when Stanley defender Phil Edwards brought down Adebayo Akinfenwa in the area and the big striker dusted himself down and sent Alan Martin the wrong way from the spot. Guinan - a summer signing from Hereford - almost added a third when his strike hit the underside of the crossbar. Jimmy Ryan hit the post with a 25-yard thunderbolt and defender Edwards headed against the woodwork as they looked for a way back. But the visitors sealed the three points when sub Billy McKay collected the ball from an Andy Holt throw after 78 minutes and hammered it into the bottom of the net. Stanley had an opportunity to score a consolation at the death but Ryan fired a penalty wide.
