Accrington shocked Shrewsbury with two goals in the opening six minutes as they secured a 2-1 win.

Stanley spring a surprise

Accrington shocked promotion-chasing Shrewsbury with two goals in the opening six minutes as they secured a 2-1 win. The Shrews stood a chance of going top of League Two if they carved out a victory and other results went their way. But Paul Simpson's side were behind within 72 seconds when Jimmy Ryan's cross was flicked on by Paul Mullin and on loan striker Terry Gornell fired home his third goal in three games. Number two soon followed when John Miles tricked his way down the left wing and crossed perfectly for Mullin to head home his fifth goal of the season. Ben Davies almost got one back for the visitors after 13 minutes but his free-kick cannoned off the crossbar. Stanley's Miles then had a chance to put the game beyond the visitors after the restart when he burst into the area but Shrews goalkeeper Luke Daniels did well to deny him. Then Davies set up a lively finale when he curled home his seventh goal of the campaign from a 20-yard free kick after 68 minutes. But despite Shrews pressure, they could not find a way through and Stanley chalked up their second successive league victory following a run of seven winless games.
